Structure Theory (2)

Here are some traditional structure examples:

AAA: This is where there is no chorus and often the title of the song is the first lyric you hear. Church hymns are usually in this formation. Trance tracks where there is no sung lyric, only spoken could easily fall into this structure but there would need to be rhythmic variation to keep the momentum going forward without the track being boring.

AABA: This is the the same as above but with a middle eight bridge to add variation. With a club track you could say that B is the breakdown and buildup section so this is actually a very popular form.

ABAB: This is a repeated verse - chorus form and is therefore very popular. This is a very traditional song structure and is used for many commercial Trance tracks.

ABC: This is verse followed by pre-chorus and then chorus. If you are finding that the transition from verse to chorus doesn't flow very well this format could be ideal. A subtle variation in between can provide the perfect link between the two.

ABCABCD: A very popular form as it provides a lot of sonic variation. This would be a verse, pre-chorus, chorus on the first run then the same with the addition of a middle eight bridge.

With electronic music the boundaries can be broken and in truth whatever works will work but following some of the structures above might well help you with the compositional aspect. Nothing beats close examination of existing structures and on the next page you will be able to watch an overview of Mike's Uplifting and Neo Trance projects as well as download them for close inspection.
