Welcome
W
hy do we take pictures? For creative endeavour; to capture funny moments or
unique events; as a technical exercise; to chill out and recharge our batteries; for
fun. But, essentially, we take pictures to capture and relive memories. Whether
that memory is a newborn baby, a family wedding, a trip to the zoo or even a
beautiful sunset or chance encounter. Our recall is that bad, it seems, a photo – or 4k movie – is
the best way to jog our memories and bring back all the precious details that were lost to time.
A reminder of the power of an image (or images) recently hit home to me when I created a
One Vision Imaging ‘Impress’ Lay Flat photo book of a trip to Portmeirion in northwest Wales for
a competition feature I shot in this issue (page 32). I carefully created a 22-page ‘walk through’
of time spent in the strange little village with my partner, Sam. It took a while to put together, to
create the right narrative, but the detailing of a beautiful presentation box all with a personalised
ribbon just added extra poignancy to the moment.
I recently gave the photo book to Sam one evening before Christmas
and the response was more than I could have hoped for. Her eyes
went glassy and more than one tear formed. She smiled and told me
she loved it. Yes part of that was the gift itself, but a huge part was
seeing those lovely memories again in print, as they are supposed to
be seen, and not one day accidently discovered when looking
through a portable hard drive.
So, with a new year dawning, I want to really encourage you all to
consider more carefully what you are going to do with your images
this year. Print them out. Share them. Make something of them:
photobook, canvas, print, mug, jigsaw, keyring, wall art, mouse
mat, calendar, phone case, cushion, fridge magnet, placemat,
