The creation of gold metallic tassels and an interesting serger elastic fabric-
scrunching effect are two additional techniques that make this pillow very special.
Project Specifications

Pillow Size: 18" x 18"

fusible tricot to wrong side of square to stabilize.
Fold square on both diagonals to find center and
trace motifs on right side of square as shown in
Fig. 2. Straight-stitch around the design lines to
stabilize. Cut out the pattern shapes just inside the
straight-stitch line.

• 12" x 12" tear-away fabric stabilizer
• 18" zipper to match fabric
• 1 spool gold metallic embroidery thread
• 1 package gold metallic elastic thread
• Coordinating serger thread
All-purpose thread to match fabric
4" piece of cardboard

Instructions
Step 1.
Cut a 20" x 20" square of cotton print with
gold metallic design. With gold metallic elastic thread
in the looper and coordinating serger thread in the
needle, chain-stitch in diagonal rows across the entire
square, using the presser foot as a guide for spac-
ing as shown in Fig. 1. Stitch with the right side of the
fabric toward the feed dogs so elastic thread will add
texture to the surface.
Step 4.
Place scrunched fabric square behind the cut-
out area. Place tear-away fabric stabilizer behind the
scrunched square. Satin-stitch the raw areas with gold
metallic embroidery thread in reverse appliqué tech-
nique. Highlight the satin stitch by working a straight
stitch around the outline. Decorative machine stitches
may be added if desired as shown in photo. Remove
fabric stabilizer.
Step 5.
Cut two pieces of cotton print with gold metallic
design 12" x 19" for pillow back. Fuse lightweight fus-
ible tricot to wrong side of each piece.
Step 6.
With 3–4-thread serged seam application,
serge the zipper between two 19" edges of pillow back
pieces using piping or multipurpose foot. It is neces-
sary to extend the zipper with the tab end beyond the
fabric edge, as shown in Fig. 3, to avoid tab contact
with the presser foot.

Step 2.
Steam-press the wrong side of stitched fab-
ric lightly to scrunch. Fuse lightweight fusible tricot to
wrong side of square to stabilize.

Step 7.
Change machine function to chain stitch and
place gold metallic embroidery thread in the looper
and coordinating serger thread in the needle.
Step 8.
Fold the fabric one inch on each side of zip-
per and bring folds to meet in the center of the coils as
shown in Fig. 4. With right sides of fabric against the
plate, serge folds to conceal zipper.
Stitch around perimeter of pillow and on traced line.
Trim fabric from stitched corners.
Step 10.
Turn pillow right side out and topstitch with
chain stitch (machine threaded as in Step 7) approxi-
mately 2" from edge. Stitch with front of pillow against
feed dogs. Repeat with two more rows using presser
foot as a guide for spacing.
Note:
When pivoting on corners, barely pierce the tip
of the needle to hold the fabric corner in position. Turn
the fabric and continue stitching until all four sides
are completed.
Step 11.
Wrap gold metallic elastic thread around 4"
cardboard template until desired fullness for tassel is
achieved. Slip a 4" length of gold metallic embroidery
thread through the folds at the top of the template
as shown in Fig. 5. Tie securely and remove threads
from the cardboard. Wrap a 10" length of gold metal-
lic embroidery thread about

shown in Fig. 6. Repeat for four tassels.

Bring folds to meet at center
of zipper coils.
Step 9.
Place pillow front and back together, right sides
facing. If you choose to make decorative corners as
shown in the photo, trace the shape on each corner.

Step 12.
Cut the other folded end of each tassel. If
raveling may be a problem, apply seam sealant along
fold. Allow to dry thoroughly and then cut along the
fold as shown in Fig. 7.

Step 13.
Hand-stitch or pin a tassel to each corner of
pillow. Insert pillow form and zip closure.
