Summary
Nagasaki Prefecture is located in the southwest of
Japan, surrounded on all sides by beautiful nature,
sea and mountains, full of historical, traditional, and
cultural riches. Nagasaki has played an important role
in the history of Japan’s international relations. A lot of
culture and knowledge from Asia and Europe came to
Japan through Nagasaki and contributed greatly to the
country’s modernization. Particularly during Japan’s
period of isolation (1641-1858), the Port of Nagasaki
was known as the only place where the Japanese could
communicate with visitors from Western Europe. Even
now, many international cruise ships call at this port. This
colorful history, in which Japanese traditional culture
has coexisted and harmonized with foreign cultures, is
evident in the architecture, language, food, and annual
events. As a city that has survived tragic events such as
Christian martyrdom and the atomic bombing, Nagasaki’s
mission today is sending a message of peace to the world.
Nagasaki Prefecture is also rich in beautiful nature and
subtropical beach sites that offer you various resorts
to relax. Flowers bloom all year around, and besides
adoring the full spectrum of the Japanese seasons, you
can also enjoy gourmet food and sports in the sea and the

NAGASAKI CITY
During Japan’s period of isolation (1641-1858), Nagasaki
was the only port where trade with Europe and China
flourished. Nagasaki is a port city that is surrounded
by mountains and offers numerous attractive features,
including history, food, and shopping opportunities.
Glover Garden
This garden has been designated as an Important Cultural Asset. Here you can
visit beautiful traditional mansions built by British merchants, including the oldest
wooden Western style home in Japan built by the Scottish merchant Thomas Glover,
who exerted a strong influence on the industrialization of Japan. The garden is flush
with flowers, has a stunning view of Nagasaki Port, and was the location that the
opera “Madama Butterfly” was based on.

Nagasaki Nightscape
Nagasaki’s night view is spectacular. With Nagasaki port at the center, mountains
loom on three sides. Homes and city lights populate the slopes, their lights
mingling with the twinkling stars in the sky. Nagasaki’s splendid night view can
be enjoyed from many parts of the city. At the World Night View Summit in 2012,
Nagasaki was recognized as one of the 3 cities with the most spectacular night
views in the world. The best way to enjoy this view is to take the glass-paneled
gondola ropeway up to Mt. Inasa.
Megane-bashi
(Spectacles Bridge)
This bridge was built in 1643 and
is Japan’s oldest stone arch bridge.
Its reflection in the river resembles
a pair of eyeglasses, which gave it
the nickname “megane-
bashi”
(spectacles
bridge). If you want
to be romantic, try
spotting a heart
shaped cobble stone
nearby the bridge.
On August 9, 1945, at the
end of WWII, an atomic
bomb was dropped on
Nagasaki. Every year, a Peace
Ceremony is held at Peace

Take a breather at Nagasaki Seaside Park located in between Matsugae
International Terminal where the international cruise ships call and the Dejima

Besides its beautiful nature, Hirado City also has a rich history as
Japan’s first overseas trading center. It is also known as the place
where Francisco de Xavier and the English samurai William Adams
visited, and this city offers many tourist attractions including Hirado
Castle and the Dutch Trading Post. Food buffs can also get their fill
with specialties such as Hirado Beef, fresh fish, and seafood.

SHIMABARA PENINSULA
In 1934, the Shimabara Peninsula became Japan’s first national
park as “Unzen.” In 2009, the “Unzen Volcanic Area Global
Geopark” became Japan’s first global geopark. In addition to its
many historic sites, the peninsula is also full of beautiful places to
enjoy the four seasons. Watch the smoke rising at “Unzen Jigoku”
(Unzen Hell), visit Mt. Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall, relax at
the hot springs, or take a walk through the former castle town.
