an you believe that we’re drawing up to Ramadan already?
While I know that many of the city will be Àeeing to cooler
climes, I for one am happy to stay put. Yes the weather is a
scorcher and I am forced to look at food all day long while
I’m fasting (which makes my job far harder than any rocket
scientist in my opinion), but it is such a beautiful time of year; a period of
calm, peace, cleansing, self reÀection, charity and of course food, that I
can’t help but get excited about it.
When I was a little girl, I remember fasting for the very ¿rst time
at the age of six in the height of summer in the UK. It was hard, but I
remember then, as I have every year since, that nothing compares to the
feeling of when iftar time draws near, the table is laden with all sorts
of sweet and savoury goodies to feast on, and the whole family gathers
to share the meal made with love. Now that my own seven-year-old is
following tradition, the joy that food brings this month knows no bounds,
with the biggest happiness being able to watch his face light up at the
dishes I’ve made to break the fast, so I’ll de¿nitely be trying out the fun
fusion eats on page 50.
The other reason I am really excited this month, is that my family
are coming! Yay! I can’t wait to show them all that this vibrant city has to
offer and also because I’ll be able to celebrate Father’s Day with my Dad
for the ¿rst time in aeons! I plan to make him a big meaty sandwich for
him to get his teeth into, so I can be his favourite this month! Why not
make like me (with your dad, not mine obvs!) by getting your hands busy
with one of the mammoth concoctions on page 62. See you next month!

REMEDY
If you’ve ever seen pictures of Cameron
Diaz without make up on, you’ll know that
she’s prone to acne. To control a breakout,
she uses powdered milk, which acts as a
gentle but effective exfoliant. Simply take
2 tsp of powdered milk and gently rub
in a circular motion all over a damp face
and neck. Rinse with warm water and pat
dry. For some sweeter smelling make-it-
yourself beauty products, turn to page 58.
While a can of these can bulk up
a vegetarian meal cheaply, they
can also help when you are trying
to lose weight. Firstly, they’re
rich in bre and can aid weight
loss because they’re also rich
in soluble bre, which forms a
gel-like substance in the digestive
tract that holds on to bile (which
contains cholesterol) and channels
it out of the body. When you see the delicious meals you can
make on page 24 as well, there’s even more reason to put them on your shopping list!
