E pride ourselves in Britain on having
‘invented’ the Santa Special, yet, as is
the case with so many aspects of life, it
always seems as though someone abroad then
goes one better! Take the train illustrated above,
for example; a suitable caption might well draw
from the words of that popular TV advertising
campaign: “if Carlsberg did Santa Specials…”

camera is an experience no rail enthusiast should

True, the whole thing appears to have been
sponsored by the bank whose name appears on
the sides of some of the coaches, but even so, it
does make our Santa Specials and Polar Expresses
look rather bland and tired in comparison.
Maybe it’s time for some ‘bright spark’ to
reinvigorate the concept.

hiS year marks two of the most
significant anniversaries of recent times
– the centenary of the start of the First
World War in July and the 75th anniversary of the
start of the Second World War two months later.
To mark these momentous occasions,

will be drawing on its archives later in the year to
produce articles commemorating the vital roles
played by the railways in the two conflicts, but in
the meantime we would like to draw attention
to a rather notable omission: Near Alrewas, in
Staffordshire, stands the National Memorial
Arboretum, a splendid tribute to the brave men

and women who gave their lives during the
hostilities and which attracts 40,000 visitors a
month, almost half a million a year. As the various
battle anniversaries come and go over the next
four or five years, that figure is expected to rise
hugely – yet all those visitors have to go by road!
There are two railways within a 10-minute
stroll, but no station. One of the lines is freight-
only but maintained to passenger standards for
diversionary purposes, so why is the opportunity
not being taken to enable hundreds of thousands
of people to pay their respects by train?
The Midlands-based Campaign for Rail
suggests a two-hourly shuttle between Derby
and Lichfield using an East Midlands Trains
‘Meridian’ that normally sits at Derby depot for
most of the day, but even a charter trains-only
halt would be better than nothing. Such
a platform was built and commissioned in
double-quick time when floods washed away a
bridge in Workington recently, so it is possible.
hiS is the time of year we have to compile
a thinner-than-normal issue in order to
meet printers’ pre-Christmas deadlines,
