FOREWORD
In studying the lives of the great showmen-Mentalists
and Psychics of the past and present, we find one thing in
common. They have all performed the effect of "Seeing Through
a Wall!"
Yet, the effect is rarely seen and hardly heard of. Each
showman does the effect perhaps only once in a lifetime but
makes sure that it becomes part of his lifestory. It may
suffice to hear the comment, "Sometimes his powers are so
great that he can see through a brick wall!"
The effect of 'Seeing Through a Wall' is hard to find in
magic literature. It becomes evident when one 'reads between
the lines,' so to speak. We hear it from the witnesses.
Yet the magic books are replete with effects that may be
presented as such. There are card tricks without number that
are adoptable to the theme.
Olof Jonsson, world famous psychic, does a card feat where
a spectator picks a card from a shuffled deck and places it
against the wall. Jonsson calls the name of the card from the
other side.
Effects where the performer must leave the room or turn his
back on the proceedings, a two-person code and most divination
effects are also good.
Yet these sensational effects will miss their mark unless
they receive the proper amount of build-up and coverage. The
showman must make sure that the test appears in print and that
the world hears of it.
To date, the test has been the exclusive property of the
very top names in Mentalism. We know that Dunninger and the
Great Alexander performed it. Scotto performed it 400 years
ago and the high priests of pre-Christian times did it 2000
years ago.

Let us go behind the scenes and observe a master Mentalist
performing the 'Seeing through a Wall' effect!
Mr. Mentalist is entertaining in high circles for a good fee.
He is in the house of the host and has already impressed his selected
audience with his mental marvels.
In the middle of the show, his gaze becomes transfixed on the
far wall of the room. He becomes a bit nervous and agitated and then
says in a surprized voice, "I see words on the walll I see phrases
and sentences. Will someone please get a paper and pencil and write
down what I tell you. Hurryl"
The Mentalist calls out words and sentences. "I also see a
title, like the title of a book!" "Yes! That is what I seel I see
a book with the title 'The Horse and Buggy Doctor.' I see many
books and I see a White statue of a horse on a shelf. I see many
shelves and many books!"
"What is on the other side of this wall?" Asks Mr. Mentalisto
He is informed that the wall adjoins the next door neighbors apart-
ment!
"Hurry! Someone please go next door and ask if they have a
book with the title I just called!"
The person chosen comes back with the book of the same title.
"Let us try something! Please open the book to page
135.
That is the
number that I saw." The book is opened to page
135
and the very first
sentence is the sentence that was called by the Mentalist!
"Sometimes these powers scare mea Seems as though I can see
right through wallsl"
The above is a true story. To the lay mind, it is uncanny.
Yet it is

presentation and 1% method.

Mr. Master Mentalist had recruited the next door neighbor as
his assistant, instructing him that on a certain day a particular
book would be called for, etc.
The Mentalist also described the room and implied that he
had never seen the room or knew the person next door.
That is the effect in its simplest method, of 'seeing through
a walll' Yet it is most direct and profound.
It takes a mighty showman to palm it off.

In essence, the performer is able to 'see' and record on pa-
per every action taken by a spectator in the next room as though
there was a hole in the walll
The effect is best done in your own home using your own book-
case but with a little trouble it can be presented anywhere.
EFFECT. Mentioning a bookcase in the next room that has sev-
eral shelves and many books, the performer proposses (or is cha··
llenged) to do a test. The audience is given a free choice of any
shelf, book and page. One person is chosen to go into the next
room and pick the chosen book from the chosen shelf and open it
to the chosen page and remember the first word.
The performer while staring at the wall, writes down all the
actions taken, naming the shelf, book page and word plus the title
and authorl
As soon as the person returns from the other room, the per-
former astounds everyone by calling out the title and author of
the book. All actions are then compared with the notes written
and prove correctl
THE SECRET. Firstly, the ninth book of each shelf are dupli-
cates. One of these books will be chosen, so that the performer
knows ahead of time the title and the author of the book. But the
shelf and page are not yet known to the performer.
Let us first assume that the test is being done in your own
home and that you have placed four duplicate books in the ninth
position, counting from left to right, on a bookcase that has
four shelves.
You will also prepare ahead of time predictions as follows.

The first three predictions are written up, mentioning the
shelf, book number, page and word plus the title and author. These
are sealed in separate small envelopes and placed in your right
side coat pocket in a known order.
You will write out the fourth prediction during the show.
THE PKESENTATIONt When you are ready to present the test, you
inform the audience that you are going to attempt a most unique
and difficult test. A type of test that is seldom tried and you are
not at all sure if you will succeed, therefor you ask for their
full attention and cooperation •
.. I am going to try to sense certain things through that
wall."
"On the other side of that wall is a bookcase with several
shelves and many books. So I will ask you to choose a shelf and
a book in a most random fashion."
Performer now gives a paper pad and pencil to one person who
is told to write down secretly, single digits given to him by mem-
bers of "the audience. Performer points to 2 persons and asks them
to please think of a single digit between 6 and 9 and to whisper
it to the person with the paper pad who is told to write it down.
A third person is then asked to think of a single digit bet-
ween 1 and 5 and to whisper it also to the writer.
"We now have a three digit number that has secretly been
chosen by you! Correct?"
"In order to arrive at a number totally random, please reverse
the three digits and place them under the three-digit number and
subtract."
"We now have a totally new 3-digit number. Correct?" The
question here is important as the answer may be a two digit number!
If the writer indicates that the answer is a two digit number,
then you will know that the number is 99 and you must write your
fourth prediction mentioning the ninth book and the ninth page
and the first shelf!
But let us assume that it is a 3-digit number, as all odds
favor it.
After a three-digit number is chosen, reversed and subtracted
one from the other, there will only be 8 possible answerst
99, 198, 297, 396, 495, 594, 693, and 792.
So you instruct the person with the new 3-digit number to go
to the next room and to use the smaller digit for the shelf, the
larger digit (9) for the book and the other digit for the page.
You have of course reminded the audience that you do not know
the
3~digit
number. You also instruct the writer to please cross
out the first 3-digit numbers and to circle the last and new 3-di-
git number and to concentrate on it. He is to work with one digit
at a time. While the person is in the next room, you pretend to
be writing down all the actions, but actually you are writing down
