Why we really, really, really,
really, really like Carly Rae Jepsen
The Canadian pop pixie responsible for the musical monolith
that is “Call Me Maybe” (don’t pretend you haven’t held that
imaginary Motorola Razr to your mouth in G-A-Y bar after a
few jugs of Cheeky Vimto) is back with another earworm single
by the name of “I Really Like You”.
Ahead of her performance at G-A-Y this Saturday 6th June, we
thought it was appropriate to list the reasons why we really,
really, really…. well, you get the idea. We love Carly Rae Jepsen!
Gay Rights
– Miss Jepsen has been pretty vocal in her support of the LGBT
community. She withdrew from a massive concert in aid of the Boy Scouts of North
America, after learning that their membership policy excludes both gay leaders and
scouts. Upon cancelling, she wrote “As an artist who believes in equality for all people,
I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer. I always
have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay
informed on the ever-changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this
country and across the globe.” Respect.
Grammys
– Those fuddy-duddies at the Grammys know a good hook when
they hear one. “Call Me Maybe” collected gongs for both Best Pop Solo Performance
and SONG OF THE YEAR in 2013. Proof that even the crabbiest of octogenarian voters
aren’t immune to those strings.
Bieber
– You know you’re on to a winner when the world’s reigning pop
prince gives you his backing. The Biebs is responsible for hooking Carly up with his
manager Scooter Braun, and also created his own lipsync video of “Call Me Maybe”
alongside then-girlfriend Selena Gomez and Disney starlet Ashley Tisdale in the early
days of it’s release. It currently has well over 70 million views on YouTube. You can’t
BUY that kind of publicity.
Tom Hanks
– The star of more or less every movie made between 1980 and
2002 agreed to do his own lipsync in the video for Carly’s new single “I Really Like
You”. Needless to say, it is amazing. Watch out for another cheeky Bieber cameo too
and a cheeky secret from Carly!
TUNES
– There’s no two ways about it, the girl knows how to craft a perfect pop
song. From lyrics that don’t take themselves too seriously, to deliciously sugary sweet
production, Carly Rae is a top chef when it comes to creating musical confections
that repeat on you in the best way possible. And she’s got tracks for every occasion;
dumped your friend with benefits? “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” is your jam. Had a
sneaky snog with your mate’s boyfriend? “This Kiss” has got you covered. Carly’s been
there, she’s lived it, she’s one of us.
BONUS
– she’s been on Broadway. As Cinderella. Opposite FRAN DRESCHER.
