BETA:
From the Artist Point parking lot just
past Mount Baker Ski Area on Highway 542,
start on the Chain Lake Trail, which skirts
below Table Mountain. Just after a mile, stay
left at the junction and follow the Ptarmigan
Ridge Trail. Enjoy ever-changing, jaw-dropping
views of Mount Shuksan (the peak in the
photo) and the Cascade Range.
Not long after, Mount Baker and its Rainbow
Glacier become increasingly dominant and
impressive. The trail officially ends after 4.5
miles, although many visitors continue another
couple of miles to the foot of the glacier.
DISTANCE:
Nine to 13 miles. Add distance
with an out-and-back to Table Mountain or
by venturing toward the Chain Lakes at the
junction one mile from the trailhead.
SEASON:
The road to the parking lot generally
only opens in late July and closes in late
September. Check road and trail conditions
before starting.
DIFFICULTY:
Easy to moderate. With an
average grade just over five percent and a total
elevation gain of 1,600 feet, the trail is fairly
kind, if the weather cooperates.
