When I was a kid someone gave me a book of historic maps, and it’s still one of
my favourite things. The maps in it were full of blank spaces – where coastlines
disappeared into blurry shrugs and the words
Terra Incognita
made frequent
appearances round the edges of what was basically known. There was this amazing
period in the 16th century when they knew the shapes of the continents (how the
hell, I have no idea) but they didn’t know about Alaska, Australia or all these other
places. And the seas were full of monsters. What a time that must have been!
These days, the closest thing we have to monsters on maps are the mountains.
Maps have long been the ultimate tool for mountain walkers. They tell you where
you are, where you’ve been and where you’re going. But what is great about maps
is they had to be learned by someone: use a map and you’re using a document that
has taken hundreds and hundreds of hours of someone’s close attention to produce.
On-the-ground surveying, scrutiny of aerial photographs, calculations... the
amount of dedication that goes into a map – any map – is unreal. And the
nal product is one piece of extremely useful paper (or, indeed, weatherproof
polyethylene). And this month, we at
