Yuan Ch’un returns to the Jung Kuo m ansion, on a v isit to her
parents, and offers her congratulations to them on the feast of
lanterns, on the fifteenth of the first m oon.
1 8. His Majesty shows m agnanim ous bounty — The Im perial consort
Yuan pay s a v isit to her parents — The happiness of a fam ily
gathering — Pao-y ü display s his polished talents.
1 9 . In the v ehem ence of her feelings, Hua (Hsi Jen) on a quiet ev ening
adm onishes Pao-y ü — While (the spell) of affection continues
unbroken, Pao-y ü, on a still day , perceiv es the fragrance em itted
from Tai-y ü‘s person.
2 0. Wang Hsi-feng with earnest words upbraids Mrs. Chao’s jealous
notions — Lin Tai-y ü uses specious language to m ake sport of Shih
Hsiang-y ün’s querulous tone of v oice.
2 1 . The em inent Hsi Jen, with winsom e way s, rails at Pao-y ü, with a
v iew to exhortation — The beauteous P’ing Erh, with soft words,
screens Chia Lien.
2 2 . Upon hearing the text of the stanza, Pao-y ü com prehends the
Buddhistic spells — While the enigm as for the lanterns are being
dev ised, Chia Cheng is griev ed by a prognostic.
2 3 . Pao-y ü and Tai-y ü m ake use of som e beautiful passages from the
Record of the Western Side-building to bandy jokes — The excellent
ballads sung in the Peony Pav ilion touch the tender heart of Tai-y ü.
2 4 . The drunken Chin Kang m akes light of lucre and shows a preference
for generosity — The foolish girl m islay s her handkerchief and
arouses m utual thoughts.
2 5. By a dem oniacal art, a junior uncle and an elder brother’s wife
