t’s no surprise
that
Inside Sport
has a great
affinity for the Olympics, beyond mere
subject matter. The magazine was only
a little more than a year old when Sydney’s
winning bid was announced in 1993. And
in the way the 2000 Games loomed over
the landscape in the years following, it
entirely influenced how we thought and
wrote about sport.
We do get excited every time
the Games come around. With
the approach of Rio 2016, that
meant it was time again to call
our Mr Olympics, Travis Cranley.
Travis is one of our sporting
omnivores and has tackled
subjects for the magazine as
varied as show jumping to
European handball. When we
first corresponded about his
assignment for this preview
issue, he was on point: “I’m doing
a ‘what-does-it-all-mean?’ story.”
The passage of every Olympiad is
something of a checkpoint in sporting time.
As Travis points out in his lead piece, the
Olympics reaches a new frontier in South
America, with all the accompanying issues
that entails (that damned mosquito being the
most curious of all). But perhaps the bigger

question facing the Olympic Games is its place
in the modern world – where it was once
the rare moment that seized and united
the global consciousness, it’s now one of a
number. And with the aid of technology, the
narrative of any given Olympics is being
subdivided even further.
It raises the question: what do we remember
a Games for? In our “My Finest
Moment” section this month,
pole vault gold-medallist Steve
Hooker makes an interesting
point – he’s seen the replays of
his 2008 victory at Beijing so
many times that his recollection
of it is closer to what viewers
saw rather than his own first-
person perspective.
For mine, one thing I’ll
remember about Sydney 2000
was not so much about the
Games, but more about
The
Games.

committee satire. For all the difficulties that
Rio may encounter, as long as the 100m track
isn’t 94m long, things will be fine.
