Sea Devon in the sky
On March 22 an Australian group returned a
former Royal Navy de Havilland C Mk.20
Sea Devon to the air. The new Redcliffe,
Queensland syndicate consists of Ron En-
nis, Stephen White, Roy Waterson, Mitch
Ennis, Warwick Woinarski, Richard God-
dard and Ray Vullermin. “We have included
as ‘honorary ‘ members previous owner Rus-
sell Mann; and in recognition of his invalua-
ble help Pat Harrington” said Ray. “CASA
have given me approval to endorse syndi-
cate members and Mitch, Warwick and
Stephen are already checked out”. The Sea
Devon, based on the DH.104 Dove type, is
registered VH-DHI and was operated com-
mercially within Ted Rudge’s DH Dove fleet
in Melbourne for many years. The current
restoration was more of a thorough and pro-
longed inspection of the aircraft and compo-
nents. The sight and sound of the 1955 clas-
sic twin in the air again will be welcomed by
many enthusiasts. Rob Fox
Pacific veteran P-40 sold
Restored from wreckage recovered from
PNG, North Queensland Warbirds’ Curtiss
P-40N Warhawk, VH-MIK has been sold to
John F. Davis III of Colorado USA. In 2005
the remains of 42-104977 were shipped to
Precision Aerospace in Victoria where the
major airframe structure was completed.
This was then sent to its owners, North
Queensland Warbirds, where the restora-
tion was completed, and they have operat-
ed it since its completion in a spurious
scheme of Dick Creswell’s P-40E Kittyhawk
A29-113. In reality, this aircraft was origi-
nally assigned to the 5th Air Force,
49th Fighter Group, 8th Fighter
Squadron, piloted by 1st Lt Joel D.
Thorvaldson. On 13 September, 1943,
Thorvaldson flew an interception
mission against twelve Betty Bomb-
ers and about forty Zeros. He man-
aged to down a Zero, but his P-40

sustained damage, and with his engine on
fire, he force landed near the Waffia and
Markham Rivers, outside of Lae. Thorvald-
son escaped down the river and was res-
cued by Australian troops.
The Warhawk was flown from Mareeba to
Precision Aerospace at Wangaratta, Victoria
by Steve Death on 8 July 2014. Here it will
have a full set of dual-controls and new rear
canopy fitted prior to shipping to the USA.
The new owner has also elected re-paint
this historic P-40 in its original 49 FG
scheme.

Werribee B-24 Liberator
Project & hangars listed
On Sunday 13 July, 2014, the B-24 Liberator
Memorial project at Werribee, Victoria, was
honoured with the aircraft (as well as the
hangar it is currently housed in) being rec-
ognised by Engineers Australia. Engineer-
ing Heritage Victoria Chair, Mr Owen Peake,
said: “Both the Liberator and the Werribee
Satellite Aerodrome Hangars are last of
their kind in Australia and hold historical
significance for Australians.”
The two remaining hangars at the former
Werribee Satellite Airfield were also recog-
nised. “The American-designed hangars rep-
resented a solidification of the relationship
between newly allied Australian and Ameri-
can forces.” he said. Mr Peake went on to re-
mark on an interesting point regarding their
construction: “The design of these hangars
was modified by Australian engineers to use
plentiful Australian hardwood, allowing the
hangars to achieve similar spans to their
steel counterparts. The 130 foot hangar is
the last of its kind in Victoria, and the 96 foot
hangar – which houses the restored B-24 air-
craft – is the last of its kind in Australia.”
The Liberator Memorial project continue
with the restoration of the aircraft, and have
commenced the reconstruction of an Air-
speed Oxford. They are currently still in
the process of securing both the site and
plans for a permanent museum at their cur-
rent location.

Erickson’s
New Bomber
CWH Net Historic Dak
On 22 May, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWH) ferried
home their latest acquisition. Douglas C-47 Dakota C-GRSB is a D-
Day veteran and flew in the RAF as FZ692 named “Kwicherbichen”.
Built for the USAAF, it was delivered to the RAF in 1944. The historic
airframe also flew in the Canadian Air Force as 12945. Story has it the
name “Kwicherbichen” was applied because the pilot was always
grumbling about something to the service crew, so one night they ap-
plied the name to the nose of the aircraft. The aircraft last flew for the
Canadian Government Environmental Emergencies, and after sitting
idle for several years was donated to the CWH. The museum’s service
crew spent several weeks preparing the aircraft for an uneventful
ferry flight from Ottawa to the CWH in Hamilton.
