during my last visit to the company,
but at that point it wasn’t evident
just how much detail would adorn
the kit itself. If the CAD drawings
are anything to go by (see p.6),
this will be a corker and I predict
that modellers who had never
previously considered building any
kit of the Walrus, might quickly
change their view.
My interest in the type was piqued
after Jan Maes’ ‘rejuvenation’ build
of the vintage Airfix 1/72 version
was published in
AMW’s
July 2011
issue. But at that time, there was
no hint of a splendid quarter-scale
offering from Airfix. What about
a 1/72 Me 262 and 1/48 P-51D
Mustang though?
The former subject, at least to
me, is no surprise as it was ripe
for attention and this kit looks as
though it will be superb; worthy
competition for Hasegawa’s
moulding I’ll wager. The decision
to provide a new-tool P-51D did
make me step back and reflect
a little, especially as Tamiya’s
tooling is generally well thought
of, but it does suffer from a
misshaped propeller, fiddly canopy
and inaccurate flaps, so Airfix’s
version will, hopefully, shine in all
these areas and take the title of
best Mustang in the scale.
We may not see as many Airfix
releases for 2017-18 as we have in
the past couple of years…but I’m
sure many of you would agree that
we’ve been a little bit spoilt in that
regard, with so much new tooling
being made available.
My personal Airfix favourites
from the past year must be
the B-17 (built beautifully by
Alan Price in this issue) and Jet
Provost, although I predict the
forthcoming Victor B.2 will take
top honours. Having inspected
the test-shot (being built by a
member of the
AMW
team as I
write), I can assure you that it
looks magnificent…and a full
build will be in next month’s issue.
