It’s a pleasure to be able to bring you a
feature about railway stamps and postal
history in this issue, because the
development of Britain’s rail network
went hand-in-hand with the expansion of
its postal service in the Victorian era.
The opportunity to send letters was hardly new,
but its affordability certainly was, following Rowland
Hill’s reforms. Steam locomotion, meanwhile, was
cutting-edge technology, drastically reducing journey
times around the country and quickly muscling in on
the profitable business of carrying parcels as well as
other goods.
Both services were about modernisation and
economic growth, even if one was louder, smokier
and more sensually exciting than the other.
Railway philately is a complex collecting area,
because (in contrast to the postal service), it was not
subject to a state-imposed monopoly in the 19th
century. Routes were created by separate
companies, requiring separate Acts of Parliament,
working in their own ways and issuing their own
stamps. Studying the story of one particular railway
can be illuminating, however, and that is the
approach we have taken (see page 38).
The Great Northern Railway carried passengers
between London and York, with branch lines offering
access to most of the cities and seaside resorts of
eastern England. It also produced newspaper
stamps, parcel stamps, agricultural sample stamps
and latterly letter stamps. It even printed stationery
and postcards, so you can slip seamlessly from
philately into ephemera whenever it suits you!
