a collection of memories. I was constantly
pulled into the wild pine forests and the
Laurissilva jungle; onto the hundreds of
kilometers of old rock paths built by hand
by our ancestors, to the harsh landscape of
the highest peaks. Although I have almost no
photos of me riding, I was there for a reason,
and I can re-live every single moment through
my photos. I can describe every situation
without physically appearing in the shot.
Madeira always has been a five-star tourist
destination, famous for its food, culture,
history, landscapes, weather and location.
Our government aimed to attract an older
tourist, and companies were mostly focused
on promoting the same kind of services for
that demographic, never adapting to new
If you were born on an island, you certainly
know how it feels to be fenced in, especially
when you’re limited to land that measures
50 kilometers by 20 kilometers (even if you
have 1,800 meters in elevation difference). At
a young age, I remembered valuing things I
didn’t have, places I couldn’t go.
Fifteen years ago, Madeira had the
potential for mountain biking, but no one
actually saw it. It was an undiscovered
mountain bike paradise. I was just a kid,
anxiously wanting to discover the rest of the
world, constantly feeling that Madeira was
too small for my dreams. I wasn’t the best
mountain biker in town, not even close, but
I always managed to pack a small camera
and follow my friends down the trails. I was
the guy who went ahead of the pack looking
