Welcome
So for this issue I’m afraid I’m hijacking
the intro to the magazine for a very good
reason, and an even better cause!
Four years ago this August, my father
passed away from prostate cancer so
this year I am taking on my toughest
ever challenge in his memory. I will
be competing in the Man Versus
Mountain Obstacle Course Race in
early September, setting off at sea level
from Caernarfon Castle. We run up
over the summit of Snowdon and then
descend back down to the village of
Llanberis. This race is around 22 miles
long, involves over 5,000ft of vertical
ascent and also includes the “Vertical
Kilometer”, a cliff-face abseil, quarry
swim and various other punishing
obstacles on route. If you want to see

This challenge scares me to death
but I want to do it in memory of my
father and try to raise awareness of
prostate cancer as well as some much
needed funds for the charity. And why,
may you ask, am I talking about this?
Well of course, if any of you very kind
collectors, manufacturers and retailers
who know me could possibly spare a
few pounds then it will go a long way
towards helping get me up and over that
mountain not to mention make a big
difference to a very worthwhile charity.

very kind corporate donors I’ve already
surpassed this so anything anyone can

Normans!
Hot on the heels of the Saxons
released by W. Britain recently
comes a great set of Normans
from Morgan Miniatures. The
figures have been sculpted by
well-known UK artist Martin
Tabony and when combined
with Gareth Morgan’s skilful
painting, you end up with
some rather fine figures.
Gareth has cleverly had
Martin size them to fit with
the Britains figures meaning
plenty of display options for
all fans of this period of his-
tory. Painted, the figures cost
£35 each, but if you prefer to
‘paint your own’ then Gareth

each. One thing Gareth did ask
me to mention is that on these
initial prototypes the shield
shoulder strap is missing. Rest
assured, this will be on the
final figures.
Black Hawk
Black Hawk, the toy soldier division of
military kit producer Andrea Miniatures,
has been relatively quiet over the past
few months but I was pleased to see some
new Western-themed figures at the recent
show. ‘Ride to Glory – On the trail to Little
Bighorn’ doesn’t really need any explana-
tion. Suffice to say, these are interesting
looking figures which are available in the
UK from Maison Militaire (www..maison-
militaire.com).

RP & Steadfast
change
Bob Prati, owner of RP World Models in Nottingham (who has
also been producing the Steadfast range for a number of years),
was thinking of retiring. I learned though at the April show, from
Malcolm Watson of Empire, that the two gents have now agreed
some form of co-operative partnership which will allow Bob to
take more time out whilst Malcolm focuses on marketing the
often forgotten about Steadfast range.
Details are still to be finalised I believe but this is good news
for collectors and makers alike as it appears both RP and the
Steadfast brand will continue in earnest. For more information
contact either Bob at RP or Malcolm at Empire and rest assured
we’ll keep you up to date as we learn more about their plans.

Following on from its previ-

More retreating
A couple of issues ago I covered some of First Legion’s ‘Retreat
from Russia’ sets including a superb French Sled carrying
wounded soldiers. Well, it appears the adage ‘great minds think
alike’ is very true, as guess what I found on the tables of Tommy
Atkins at the April show! The Turners have done a very similar
set but obviously in their style which is vastly different to FL’s.
Expect to pay £100 for the set.

Competition winner
Our congratulations to Flora Bougiatioti from Vouliagmeni
in Greece who was the lucky winner of set TYW001a depict-
ing Porthos Playing with Kitten and Aramis Standing with
Book, kindly donated by First Legion from its new Thirty
Years War range. The answer to the question: Although Al-
exandre Dumas’ novel was fiction , he weaved in to the story
various real life characters of the period, one of whom was
portrayed as the major ‘baddie’ of the story, but what was
this person’s full name (note full name not just the abbrevia-
tion often used in the book)? was of course Armand Jean du
Plessis, Cardinal - Duke of Richelieu and of Fronsac.
