for Free Flight, but things have never stayed
the same or we would still be flying linen
covered, bamboo structure FF models and
competing for the fastest straight line speed.
Ultimately we do need more youngsters
participating in aeromodelling or we will not
have the weight of membership to ensure our
voice is heard and we have access to the sites
we need.

ALL DESPAIR FOR FF SITES?
he optimism we felt when
putting together the last issue
of AeroModeller, that there
would be model flying this year
at Middle Wallop, was cruelly
dashed when the Military Authorities at the
MOD site would not give permission for Free
Flight activities. The organisers SAM 1066
are still waiting for full details of why their
application was rejected, but they have not given
up and will continue the dialogue and will also
look for alternative sites in the South West.
It is easy to become despondent about the
recent reduction in available large MOD
sites for Free Flight flying, but surely as a
community we have the will and energy to
find solutions? And we do have the use of
other sites owned by the MOD (e.g. North
Luffenham) and sites under the control of
other landowners. Port Meadow on the edge
of Oxford is one site which although there are
restrictions on running IC engines, will hold
three FF duration and/or scale events this
year (including FF Duration Rally on 11-12
June, and Dreaming Spires on 3 July).

ith the design of
AeroModeller we try to get
a happy balance of visually
appealing layout with readable text
and captions – AeroModeller may be
80 years old but we don’t want to be
stylistically trapped in the last century!
Earlier in the year we received
comments about the legibility of
some of the text and as a consequence
we have made what we hope are
improvements in the May and June
(current) issues. I’m interested to
get your views on whether we have
succeeded, what you like about
AeroModeller’s layout and what
doesn’t work, so we can improve things
in future. Using this and the last issue,
please let me have your thoughts.
When sending in your comments
give the month and page number; as
well as your general thoughts, please
score the text legibility between 1 and
5, where 1 is Poor, 3 is OK, and 5 is
Excellent.

D-DAY COMMEMORATIONS
ach year the
6th June is
remembered
as D-Day, the
day in 1944
when the allies landed in
France to liberate Europe
and bring a close to WWII.
As one would expect this
significant date is particularly
celebrated in Normandy
where the landings beaches
were sited (Utah in the East,
through to Sword in the
West). One needs no excuse
to visit Normandy at any
time as it has some beautiful
countryside and resorts, but
for those interested in WWII
it has plenty of museums and
places of interest.
Last year I was holidaying
on the Cherbourg peninsula
of Normandy during the
commemoration of the
Landings and visited a
hidden gem of an aviation
site – the Airship Hangar at
d’Ecausseville which is about
30km from Cherbourg. The
hangar and its surroundings
was the venue for a day of
activities associated with
D-Day. Outside there was a
cabaret of 1940s music with
a female singer from London
belting out Glenn Miller hits,
and this being France there
was freshly cooked barbecued
food and chips along with
beer and cider. The high
point was undoubtedly the
parachute drops by a team
of ex-army (mostly Swedish)
paratroopers from Douglas
Dakota/C-47 aircraft.
Then there was the hangar
which looms over the site at
30m high and 140m long.
This was constructed during
WWI to house airships
which were used to patrol the
Channel looking for German
submarines. It is an early
example of a structure built
almost entirely of concrete.
On the day the hangar was
used by the paratroopers
to pack their ‘chutes after
landing, and also housed a
local model club who gave
demonstrations of indoor
flying.
The Airship Hangar at
d’Ecausseville has a small
museum which charts the
fierce battle for Montebourg
which took place nearby in
June 1944, and also explains
the history of the hangar
and its many uses over the
last century. The museum is
open for much of the year,
and various events are staged
in the Hangar including the
opportunity to try human-
powered mini-airships (you
sort of swim/row them!)

remains of a crashed
FW190.
The local model flying
club had a display of
larger models and flew
indoor RC displays in the
cavernous space.
Seeing Dakotas drop paratroopers wearing
original WWII style chutes was a stirring but
poignant sight when one remembers how
many casualties there were in June 1944.
