Encouraging Kids
t is a ‘Fool’s Errand’ trying to predict the future but I along with many
others wonder what it holds for build and fly aeromodelling when
every year the average age of participants increases by one year. It
seems that hi-tech devices with virtual world games and apps give
instant rewards that many youngsters crave, and aeromodelling
struggles to compete with such seduction.
All is not lost, as John Bristow of Deluxe Materials found out when he
went flying in a local field one weekday afternoon with his Mills diesel
powered RC Tomboy Senior. Just after school finishing time he found
himself surrounded by an eager posse of children demanding to know,
“What is it?”, “Is it a drone?”, “Did you make it yourself?” and “Is that a
real engine?”. A few minutes spent answering their questions may well
have sown the seeds for some suitable build and flying endeavours.
Looking back at AeroModellers from 70 years ago, Freddie produced
one of my all-time favourite AM cartoons for the January 1947 issue. I
wonder if the attitude alluded to in the cartoon explains why there were
so many young aeromodellers starting in the 1940s and 1950s?

Congratulations to the British
F1D Indoor Duration team of
Mark Benns, Martin Judge
and Tony Hebb for winning
the team silver medal at the
FAI Championships in Slanic,
Romania. At the top of the
rankings were the home team
from Romania. In the individual
competition Tony Hebb won
a bronze medal with a total
time of 54.12, with Ivan Treger
(SVK) placing first with 57.09,
and Corneliu Mangalea (ROU)
second with 55.26.
OXFORD MFC FREE
FLIGHT RALLY
10-11 JUNE
There aren’t many flying venues like
Port Meadow, Wolvercote which
feature as a backdrop the elegant
skyline of an ancient university city,
has cows and horses on the common
grazing and is bounded on one
side by a river as well known as the
Thames. This most English of settings
is the site for the annual Oxford MFC
FF Rally from 18:30 on Saturday 10th
June and from 10:00 on Sunday 11th.
Saturday evening is for ‘Champagne’
fly-offs of F1G, F1H and HLG/Cat.
Sunday features five flights in rounds
for F1G (Cd’H) and F1H (A1), and
three flights no rounds for P30/CO2,
E36, Vintage Rubber, Vintage/Classic
Glider, Tailless R&G, and HLG/Cat.
All towlines are maximum 50 metres,
no tech (streamers, thermistors, etc.),
and given the setting no IC models.

The common at Port Meadow makes for a delightful change from
the wind blasted airfields of the East of England.
PANDAS SINGLE CHANNEL & RETRO RC FLY-IN
Sunday May 21st 2017 is the date for the Sixth Single Channel
& Retro RC Fly-in at Pontefract Park, with hosts PANDAS
(Pontefract And District Aeromodellers Society). Last year’s
event was a huge success having 120 plus visitors with 50 plus
flying and having a great time. As well as Retro RC there will
be grass Control-Line circles with the chance to ‘have-a-go’ if
you’ve never or not held a handle for many a year.
Each year the event has a theme for the RC models and this
year it is ‘Geometrical’ – deltas, circular models, ellipses, etc.
though the theme is just one event of many and throughout the
day any single channel, retro or vintage model is welcome to
fly. Sorry, no FF on this site.
