I also celebrate 2 years as editor
of AeroModeller with this issue,
which is just a fleeting moment
in its existence. The fact that
AeroModeller continues is partly down to the work of previous
editors such as D. A. Russell, C. S. Rushbrooke, Ron Moulton,
P.S. Richardson and Martyn Cowley – it is a wonderful heritage
for me to build on. As Isaac Newton said ‘Standing on the
Shoulders of Giants.’
As part of our 80th anniversary, you will find in this issue an
appreciation by Peter Scott of C. E. Bowden who wrote on petrol
spark ignition models in our first ever issue back in November
1935. There will be other items looking back at the earlier days
of AeroModeller in coming issues, including Tony Dowdeswell
remembering working alongside Ron Moulton in the 1960s, and
memories of that great cover artist and aeromodeller in the 1940s,
C. Rupert Moore.
One final thought. Producing AeroModeller, in fact any
publication, is a bit like free flight modelling -you work as hard as
you can on the preparation, trying to get every part correctly set,
but once it has left your hands it takes on a life of its own. Here’s to
the next 80 years!

AeroModeller at 80
0 years is a long time by anyone’s reckoning – I had
difficulty finding out whether there was any precious metal
or stone associated with such a milestone, like silver is for
25 years. Eventually I found that this is the more prosaic
‘Oak’ anniversary, hence the glimpses of wood you will
see on the cover. Oak isn’t a common aeromodelling material,
although I bet we all have the odd piece of hard balsa which could
be mistaken for oak!

Nationals Fun Flying
The Nationals at Barkston over the August bank holiday weekend is officially a
series of serious competitions which are reported elsewhere in AeroModeller. But
for the fun that is at the core of aeromodelling for many of us, it is the evening’s
‘Chuck and Duck’ that is a highlight! The organisation this year was excellent
with the sports FF being kept at a good distance of separation from the FF scale
competition – thanks go to the BMFA marshalls and of course all the fliers for
ensuring both happened in harmony.
On Saturday night the sky was spectacular dark moody clouds with tinges of
red, and I managed to get these evocative photos with a powerful flash – it was
not as dark as the flash makes the background appear!
Andy Gedney was having fun flying this Mills powered Bowden
Kangette. See elsewhere in this issue for the CEB story.

Gildings Auction of Model Engines
Airfields under threat from Developers
In 2003 an ‘administrative oversight’ led to the deletion of planning
protection from UK airfields with them being classified as brownfield
sites. As a result airfields are being closed by developers, thus stopping
the many users including aeromodellers, and threatening some unique
natural habitats.
Please sign this petition on the government website. We need to get to
100,000 signatures for this to be debated in parliament. Please share as

European CL Speed Golds for Great Britain
At the recent European Championships for control line models in Pazardijk,
Bulgaria, Paul Eisner of Great Britain became the 2015 European Champion in
F2A Speed beating 27 other top-level competitors to take the gold medal with
an individual flight of 302.1 kph. Fellow team members Ken Morrissey and
Dick and Toby will again be on hand to ensure the smooth
running of the Gildings Engine Auction on 7th November.
The annual auction sale of Vintage, Classic & Modern
model engines plus associated plans, tools, models and kits
will take place on Saturday 7th November 2015, at Gildings
premises in Market Harborough. They have over 500 lots
with many engines including four Wankel rotaries, a host of
Jetex stuff, a good selection of kits (including some very early
by Aeromodels) and some workshop items such as a Myford
ML10 lathe and accessories.
The sale will commence at 10.30am as in previous years,
viewing on Friday 6th November in the afternoon.

Peter Halman also did well placing 4th and 7th respectively, and their combined
speed was enough to beat their nearest rival (Hungary) by 5.20 kph to take the
Team gold medal with a combined best speed of 900.4 kph. The F2A team
have taken team gold in every consecutive FAI Championship since 1997.
Congratulations to the British team for this golden success from all at
AeroModeller. I’m pleased to say that there will be an article from Paul Eisner
about the European Championships in the next issue of AeroModeller.
Interscale 2015
On the weekend of 14-15 November 14-15 the
famous Interscale event for indoor FF scale
flying will be held again in Nijmegen in the
Netherlands. If you are interested in competing
