100 YEARS OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE
Nine Hawker Fury IIs of Hawkinge-based 25 Squadron, freshly delivered from
Brooklands in October 1936. All carry the unit’s parallel black bands and most have
a triangle on the fin in the colours of their flight and the squadron badge, a hawk
alighting on a glove hand. Third and sixth from the back are flight leaders’ aircraft.
In the foreground is the CO’s machine, K7270: this was further decorated with its fin
and tailplanes painted black.

1940. Mac managed
to return to Britain on
the paddle steamer
Golden Eagle;
his
Hurricane took nearly

disbandment of
the ‘Firebirds’, 56
Squadron on the
McDonnell Phantom
FGR.2 (middle) at
Wattisham. The unit
had flown Phantoms
since March 1976.
The ‘number plate’
of 56 Squadron
was transferred to
the Tornado F.3s
of 229 Operational
Conversion Unit
(background), the
‘new’ 56 flying F.3s
until April 2008.
The squadron took
delivery of its first
Lightnings (F.1As)
in January 1961,
going on to F.3s and
retiring its last F.6s
in June 1976. For
the disbandment
formation in 1992,
British Aerospace
provided F.6 XP693
from Warton, where
it was being used
for Tornado air
defence variant radar
development trials.
