Foreword
This new edition includes more changes and added games than
any previous one since "According to Hoyle" was first published
in 1935.
It
presents:
-Many more solitaire games and games to be played by and
with children, recognizing that the populat.ion is increasingly
more mature and that games for children to be taught and
for parents and grandparents to enjoy playing with them are
therefore more important. '
-The 1981 changes in the bridge laws most frequently called
upon-the first changes since 1963.
-The new and more daring strategies in backgammon as
played by mod8rn experts, a total change from the conserv-
ative strategy of earlier days.
-The latest strategy in Black Jack (Twenty-one), including
advice that has caused the gambling casinos to change their
rules so as to try to retain their comparatively small advan-
tage against skillful players. Even the popular home game
has been affected by the newly discovered odds and strategy
that take away much of the bank's advantage.
-Some new games, not yet widely played, but which you are
invited to try.
Considerable effort has been exerted to clarify the rules of all
