It is common for an audience to become
amazed and awed at the antics of the
Mentalist. But when an audience of magicians
and mentalists is amazed at the performance on
stage, you know you have something to conjure
with.
Such a thing happened at the Collector's
Work Shop Convention, at Bethesda, Md. last April
29th to May 2nd.
A Mentalist competing with magicians won first
prize! Probably for the first time. Secondly Count
Anthony from Madrid performed his show, unsolicited!
First to a small group which soon grew to a large
crowd.
The Count did his
Q &
A Test which he does very well.
But
what amazed the Mentalists was his dramatic opening effect. The
Count makes a fast entrance holding a felt-tip pen and a small
clipboard that holds a few blank cards. He then writes a number
on the top card on the clipboard and points to anyone to callout
a number from 1 to 100. Immediately he turns the clipboard over
to show the same number and then scales the card into the
audience. This is repeated a second and third time, very fast.
What amazed the Mentalists was that the numbers on the cards
were written in ink!
The lines making the numerals were thick
and large like if writen with a felt tip pen!

The Count spent the next
three days at the AME estate
but
talking
doing
nothing
Mentalism.
There is nothing new about
ink-writing Swamis, These have
been around for years BUT read
on.
THE GREAT REVELATION.
I
do not get impressed easily.
One time I spent an evening at
the home of a Mentalist who
spoke for hours about his world
shaking Mental
effects.
At
the end of the evening I had
learned
nothing
and
had
forgotten his talk as fast as
I heard it.
I considered his
mentalism "hanky-panky."
For
these were magic tricks done
with sticks and small tags,
etc.
THE COUNT
ANTHONY BLAKE OF MADRID
On the other hand what Count Anthony revealed to me in the
privacy of my den appeared to me as a gift from the Gods. The
Count showed me his Swami gimmick that clipped unto his thumb
nail, a tiny thing hardly noticeable.
Then he said, "My Swami
gimmick replenishes its own ink automatically!"
My head swooned.
- - "What did you say?" I asked. He repeated,
"My Swami gimmick
is always ready for it replenishes its own ink automatically."
I was stunned! I do not believe it,
thought I.
But the
Count was kind enough to reveal his great secret. He took from
his pocket what I choose to call "The Sacred Ink Well," for want
of a better name.
This was nothing more than a desk ink pad. (A
very cleverly prepared ink pad that only a Mentalist had need
for.) ·After each show the Count simply takes his thumb writer and
places it into the ink pad
and closes it and the gimmick
instantly absorbs ink from the pad and is ready for the next show!
The Count claims that he invented this method all by his
lonely self and that no one else in the world knows about it. To
be honest I found this unbelievable.
There must be some one else
who knows this ruse, thought I. So after the Count left, I called
some well informed Swami fans and asked them about it. All said
they had never heard of it.
In fact one fan almost threw the
phone at me.
"There is no such thing." he screamed.
Here follows, with the Counts permission, the details on how
the reader can prepare his own Sacred Ink Well.
To my knowledge,
it appears in print for the first time!

THE COUNT'S GIMMICK is a thumb nail clip-on Swami.

It is made by a jeweler of non-corrosive
metal.
The Count says that the ink contains an acid
that will eat up the metal unless it is non-corrosive.
The tip of a felt tip pen is cut off and then inserted
into the Swami in place of the pencil lead.

THE SACRED INK WELL. For this you will need an ink pad. Due
to the many popular rubber-stamp games for children,
ink pads
come in many sizes and shapes. These are sold at stationery and
dollar novelty stores.
I bought one that looks like a small
bottle two inches high and had an ink pad the size of a dime. The
reader should choose his own size. Here I will describe the ink
pad used by Count Anthony.
The ink pad is square and measures 3 by 4 inches and is half
an inch thick.
The ink sponge in the pad must be sealed by
covering it with a piece of thick but flexible polyethylene film
or any thick soft plastic material.
Let Fig. 2 represent the piece
of plastic to cover the ink sponge.
This piece should be the size of the
ink pad 3 by 4 inches.
Next drill
a tiny hole in the center of the
covering as shown by the arrow in
Fig.
2. The hole must be a hair
smaller than the diameter of the
felt tip that will be used.
Now if
you stick the point of the felt tip
of your swami into the tiny hole, it
should
fit
snuggly
and remain
anchored in place.

Next place the plastic sheet covering over the ink sponge
sealed it with a good strong adhesive tape all around.
The
sponge in your ink pad is now sealed, except for the tiny hole
after the swami is inserted into the tiny hole,
no amount of
should leak out of it so that it can be safely carried in
pocket or brief case.
NOW! When you stick the felt tip of your swami into the tiny
hole and close the ink pad box, your swami will replenish its own
ink supply by capillary action!
Automatically, of course, while
you enjoy some Columbian coffee!
The ink pad box is kept closed by encircling it with rubber
bands.
That will keep the swami under pressure and in place and
ready for the next show!
THE CLIBOARD.
The clipboard used

is not as innocent
as it
may look for it too is part of the conspiracy. The clipboard used
by the Count is cleverly designed for the sole purpose of assiting
in the writing with the swami on the right thumb tip.

This shows a small
clipboard measuring about 3 by 4 inches, just large
enough to hold four or five blank cards which are
used to write the numbers on. Fig. 3 shows the back
of the clipboard which has a piece of material that
sticks out perpendicular to the board.
When
holding the clipboard in the palm of the right
hand, the material that sticks out is held between
the first and second fingers of the right hand.
That frees the right
thumb for the writing!
Clever? Of course!
The back of the clipboard is
covered with felt material.
THE LONG WRITERS.
The Long Writers, Fig.
4,
were first writen up in Phanta Graphs (early 1981).
These were declared pipe dreams by the critics. In
spite of that two models were made that I know about.
I made a crude model which worked but I did not have
a workable or practical ink well so I shelved it.
Ray Piatt made one and said it was the greatest
gimmick ever. Ray had no patience for writing with
the long writer so he also shelved it.
Actually, writing with the long writers is most
easy after a bit of practice. All that is needed is
to learn to write numbers zero to nine.
But now with the secret of the Sacred Ink Well,
the Long Writers will come of age. All you need is
to stick the business end of the Long Writer into the
hole of the ink well and tie the whole thing with
rubber bands and carry it in your brief case and you
are ready to do miracles.

There it is Gentlemen. You got to admit that here is one
fabulous secret.
If you are the type of Mentalist that loves to
dazzled your audiences silly, this is for you. What person in his
right mind is going to believe that you have a tiny almost
invisible tool that writes like a felt tip pen? The Count claims
that he can write 57 characters, numbers or letters before his
swami runs dry!
To replenish the ink in the well, the Count uses a hypodermic
needle.
