Pre-war Dinky Toys Delivery Van Sets could reach five figures
each at Special Auction Services.

FOR the first time ever two
exceptionally rare Dinky
Toys Delivery Van sets are
going under the hammer in
the same auction. The sale
in question is taking place
at Special Auction Services
in Newbury on 19th
November and specialist
toy expert Hugo Marsh
is particularly excited
about the opportunity for
collectors.
These
two
pre-war
sets were first released
80 years ago. The first
(numbered
A1008)
contains:

Hornby
Trains, 28b Pickfords, 28c
Manchester
Guardian,
28d OXO, 28e Ensign
Lukos and 28f Palethorpes
Sausages. While the second
(also numbered A1008,
confusingly)
has

Kodak, 28h Sharp’s Toffees,

Crawford’s Biscuits, 28m
Wakefield’s Castrol and 28n
Meccano.
“To my knowledge these
two sets have never been
offered together in the
same auction,” explained
specialist Hugo Marsh.
“They
are
from
the
collections of two very fine

his issue while writing a feature on Gerry Anderson, I
was reminded of what a powerful impact his work has
had on generations. Whether you watched
Four Feather
Falls
in the early 1960s,
Terrahawks
in the '80s or even
the re-issues of
Thunderbirds
et all in the 1990s, it's likely that
Gerry Anderson's output has had a significant impact on your
life... even if you don't collect the toys inspired by his work.
Humming a theme tune, mentioning a key phrase or talking about
a particular character immediately evokes powerful images of some
fantastic television series. However, what amazed me particularly
the other day was when I overheard someone talking about their
Thunderbirds
toys. "Oh yeah, I had the original vintage Thunderbirds
Tracy Island," he said confidently. Although, as lifelong Anderson
collectors will know, the 'vintage' Tracy Island he was referring to was
actually the Matchbox version released in the early 1990s but for this
chap in his early 20s, this was the toy he grew up with, so it must
have seemed positively ancient. I think this goes to show the lasting
appeal of Gerry Anderson's work and, even though many of his best
shows are now in their 50s, they've aged superbly and if some of us
look that good in our 50s and upwards, then we'll be rather chuffed.
But the appeal of Gerry Anderson is still strong, despite his death
in 2012, and his son has taken over the baton for future Anderson
projects. In 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of
Thunderbirds,
Anderson's most successful show, ITV is planning to create an
entirely new series using a mix of computer generated images and
live action. But that's not all, just as we were heading to press there
was the rather exciting announcement that Anderson Entertainment
is planning to create a brand new show called
Firestorm
that will
be filmed in Ultramarionation and will feature a mix of puppets,
miniatures and practical effects. Who knows, perhaps in 50 years
collectors will be talking about their favourite
Firestorm
toys?

whom sadly died recently.
Each set is estimated at £8,000
to £10,000.”
However, these aren’t the
only interesting lots coming
up in the auction, as Hugo
explains. “On the strength of
the above I engaged in a little
gentle arm twisting on a long-
standing client whose family
were Triumph distributors in
the 1950s and ‘60s. They had
received an incredible trade
box of 12 Dinky Toys Triumph
2000s and each one was in
special Triumph colours and
each had a different label -
although one has fallen off in
the last 51 years.
“As a young man our
client decided to keep this
box, which was a wise move
because we have estimated
it at £8,000 to £10,000. I
believe that if it sells it will
be the most valuable post-
war Dinky set or trade box
ever sold at auction.”
Finally
Hugo
added
that although the label on
the trade box shows the
return address as Standard
Triumph in Coventry, it
was actually posted from
the Dinky factory on Binns
Road, Liverpool – something
Hugo has seen before on
promotional items.

Citroen type H Van 'Baroclem'.
It was issued as a promotional

company. Estimated at an

No, that's not a photograph from the upcoming
Star Wars
films,
it is in fact a picture of two toys based on Han Solo and Chewbacca
created by Hot Toys. After announcing it had acquired the
Star
Wars
licence earlier this year, Hot Toys is hitting the ground running
by producing two of the fan favourites from the early films and
these 1/6 scale action figures are incredibly lifelike. Both come with
numerous accessories and can be posed in a number of different
positions, thanks to dozens of articulation points. If this is the
standard of Hot Toys'
Star Wars
products, then we hope it also
turns its attention to the likes of Boba Fett and Darth Vader, Plus...
would it be too much to expect 1/6 scale vehicles?

LONG LIVE THE KING
Following some speculation, the designers at Hornby have
announced they are indeed developing a GWR 6000 'King' Class
locomotive; C.B. Collett's powerful passenger loco that saw action
from 1927 until 1962. Currently Hornby's first, fully detailed,
Hornby King will be available from the third quarter in 2015
and further models will follow later that year. The 2015 Hornby
models will be R3331 GWR 4-6-0 'King James' 6000 Class (RRP
£159.99), R3332 BR 4-6-0 'King Edward VIII' 6000 Class BR Late
(RRP £159.99) and R3370TTS BR 4-6-0 'King Richard II' 6000
Class BR Early featuring TTS sound (RRP £179.99).

WITTY WINGS CLOSES
Speculation had been circulating for some time that Witty Wings
was experiencing some problems in the Far East but it's now been
confirmed by UK distributor Clevelands Diecast that the firm has
gone out of business. The two Eurofighter Typhoons are the last
models to leave the factory and there will be no more. No future
releases of Witty/Sky Guardians 1/72 aircraft or Witty and Apollo
400 civil aircraft will be made. All back orders for these items have
been cancelled. Please note this closure does not affect either
Aviation 72 or Sky Guardians Europe tooling as these are not part
of the same factory set up.

recently auctioned off
the late Dennis Brown
Collection of Gauge One
Locomotives as part of
its
Transport
Auction
on 10th September at
the Donnington Priory
saleroom in Berkshire.
Dennis was a well-
known long-time member
of the Gauge One Model
Railways
Association,
running the models he
built all around the North
and East of England.
Born in 1924, Dennis
attended an engineering
apprenticeship
with
Marshalls of Gainsborough,
before serving in the Royal
Navy during the Second
World War. After the war
he returned to engineering
and, in retirement took up
building and running gauge
one locomotives.
His collection just oozed
quality and included many
fantastic pieces. Top among
these was a well-engineered
model of a 5-inch gauge
Great Western Railway
4-6-0 tender locomotive
‘Torquay Manor’, No. 7800,
built to the Martin Evans
design. Measuring 168cm
long with a 24cm wide cab,
this impressive beast sold
for £6,500.
An equally impressive
example was an exhibition-
quality model of the
rarely seen 3.5-inch gauge
Southern Class S15 4-6-0
tender locomotive ‘Greene
King’ No. 481 built by the
award-winning builder Mr.
J. Wingate of Winchester.
Measuring 119cm long
and complete with its own
glazed display case, it made
a king’s ransom of £5,000.

SNAITH TOY MUSEUM
Snaith Toy Museum is open the first weekend of every month
from April to December, in order to raise funds for Yorkshire
Cancer Research. The non-profit organisation has a growing
number of toys on display and during the open weekends a
particular theme will be chosen, e.g. Meccano, toy soldiers and
even live steam locomotives. What's more, on Saturday, 25th
October the museum will be holding a one day exhibition in Goole
at the Courtyard, Boothferry Road, DN14 6AE. The exhibition will
include Dinky, Hornby and Meccano, along with various guest
exhibitors. Meanwhile, the museum itself is located at 9a George
Street, Snaith, East Yorkshire, DN14 9HY. Sadly, there's no phone

MARS ATTACKS INVADES
Good news for those of you that remember the collectable card
series Mars Attacks from Topps because Mantic Games is about
to release a board game inspired by the gruesome invaders. The
game was funded via Kickstarter last year (a website that allows
people to contribute towards the cost of creating a product) after
raising a whopping $558,076 and will soon be available at retail,
for those that missed out on the special Kickstarter deals. The
game costs around £50 and comes with more than 40 detailed
miniatures, scenery and a game mat inspired by Mars Attacks. For
