Welcome
ark back several decades to my
early years and as I held my first
love, the Matchbox Superfast
Lotus Europa, the thought
occurred to me that I would never be able to
own a real one as they wouldn’t make them
when I was old enough to drive! The concept
of buying a previously owned car had not
dawned on my five year old mind way back
then, despite the fact that my parents had
one. Back to the present day and, despite
now being aware of second hand cars, I still
haven’t managed to own one, or even drive
somebody else’s. A man who has is Alwyn
Brice and he fondly remembers his in this
issue through many models by a variety
of manufacturers from around the world,
including my fabulous Superfast version of
course. Taking my blissful ignorance back
in 1969 one step further, imagine our world
without the possibility of buying models
second hand? I know right, it’s unthinkable!
Thankfully my so-called vision of the future
did not materialise into a reality. Ah the
innocence of youth eh? One toy that did
elude me from my formative Corgi/Dinky/
Matchbox years was the original James
Bond Aston Martin DB5, Corgi Toys No 261.
Released in time for Christmas 1965, I guess
I was too young at just over a year old and
missed out, so imagine my delight when the
50th anniversary version was announced.
We’ve managed to get our hands on a trade
pack to split up and give away to six lucky
readers, so one of you will get the much
sought after gold version that has been
creating so much news recently. It has all
the gadgets that the early versions had
and comes in a superb box that even has a
gadget of its own! Close inspection of the
packaging reveals that it is only for those
aged 14 and over. But its spec is nearly
identical to the ones we played with! Don’t
you just love all the rules and regulations
these days? Thank goodness I’m not still five
years old; I just act it sometimes...
