Welcome to TS&MF, the world’s No. 1 magazine for collectors
of all stripes!
I’ve been so busy scrambling to pull this edition together that it
really hasn’t sunk in yet that this is issue 200! That’s quite a testament
to TS&MF’s enduring success. It’s also a personal milestone because
I have had a hand in around 180 or so of those issues and I’ve been at
the helm as editor every month since issue 67 in 2003.
I wish to sincerely thank everyone whose help and support
have made it all possible through the years. But instead of
celebrating, I feel compelled to roll up my sleeves and get back
to work on striving to bring wide-ranging, eclectic and hopefully
interesting hobby-related coverage to my fellow collectors.
This month Daniel P. Jones chimes in with an article titled “Strike Up the Band!” He
profiles Dave Leigh, whose specialized passion is collecting all sorts of miniature musicians.
Medieval warrior monks are the subject of an essay penned by Thor Johnson. His
intriguing look at the history of Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic knights and other
Christian military orders is illustrated by exquisite figures of his own making as proprietor of
The AeroArt St. Petersburg Collection.
I’m writing these lines in late October 2014, a time of year when the weather is turning
colder, but the toy soldier and model figure show season is heating up.
Much to my dismay, I was forced to miss September’s 34th Annual OTSN Inc. Chicago Toy
Soldier Show as a result of the thousands of flight cancellations triggered by an arson fire at a U.S.
Federal Aviation Administration control center. But I’ve still managed to cobble together a brief
show report enhanced by some great photos from angels of mercy who came to my rescue.
Colin Romanick reports on the 6th Annual Military History Weekend in Williamsburg,
Va., USA, Oct. 11-12. He surveys the event’s appeal to history buffs, military miniatures
enthusiasts and wargamers of all ages.
“Kit Korner” columnist Paul Newman casts a net over two major European model
figure shows: Euro Militaire in Folkestone, Kent, England, Sept. 20-21; and Scale Model
Challenge in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Oct. 12. He checks out the vendors, explores the
exhibitions and shares photos of stunning entries in the events’ competitions.
Every year I look forward to reviewing seasonal sets in the last edition of TS&MF
expected to arrive in the majority of readers’ hands before Christmas. The year 2014 is no
exception and this time I bring tidings of new releases from both King & Country Ltd. and
W. Britain. The sets are highlighted by a common theme inspired by the unofficial truce that
spread along World War I’s Western Front at Christmastime in 1914.
As usual, there’s lots more in store in this edition, so please start turning the pages, enjoy,
Merry Christmas and, as always, happy collecting!
