MOSFET driver features adaptive
dead-time for high efficiency
Micrel has introduced the MIC4605, an 85V
half-bridge MOSFET driver which features
adaptive dead-time and shoot-through
protection. The adaptive dead-time circuitry
helps to improve power efficiency, and the
shoot-through protection prevents
erroneous inputs and noise from turning
both MOSFETs on at the same time.
Future Electronics to sell Central
Semiconductor products in EMEA
Central Semiconductor has expanded its
distribution agreement with Future
Electronics into EMEA. Future Electronics
has been a franchised distributor of Central
Semiconductor in North America for ten years.
Central Semiconductor’s product range
includes energy-efficient and miniature
discrete semiconductors and custom multi-
discrete modules.
The new devices provide an unusually rich
choice of high-performance analogue
peripherals for embedded signal conditioning.
These include two 12-channel, 12-bit ADCs
capturing up to 2Msamples/s, four fast
comparators with an internal voltage reference,
and four state-configurable timers, a peripheral
type that is unique to NXP.
These features make the LPC1500 series
particularly well suited to motor-control and
digital-power applications, in which it can offer
<1ns PWM resolution and perform analogue-to-
digital conversions in just 400ns.
The LPC1500 parts operate at frequencies of
up to 72MHz. The ARM Cortex-M3 CPU
incorporates a three-stage pipeline and uses a
Harvard architecture with separate local
instruction and data buses as well as a third
bus for peripherals.
For industrial applications, the LPC1500
integrates an on-chip C_CAN controller with a
dedicated programming interface stored in ROM.
Some parts are also equipped with a Full-Speed
USB2.0 device controller with on-chip PHY.

The ACTT8-800C0, ACTT8X-800C0 and
ACTT8B-800C0 are AC thyristor triac power
switches with clamping capabilities which
protect them against low- and high-energy
transients. They are ideal for use in applications
which require the ability to safely withstand high
over-voltages, or which require compliance with
the IEC 61000-4-5 standard. These may
include AC fan, pump and compressor controls,
highly inductive and resistive loads, white
goods, and reversing induction motor controls.
The devices are also notable for their high
minimum gate current, which gives them

DC-DC converters combine high isolation and wide
operating temperature range
CUI INC
CUI Inc., has introduced a family of low-
power board-mounted DC-DC converters
for use in harsh environments and
demanding applications.
The unregulated PEM series provides 3,000V
DC of I/O isolation and a wide operating
temperature range of -40°C to 105°C. There
are two ranges of converters in the family:
the PEM1-S devices are rated for a 1W
output, and the PEM2-S for a 2W output.
CUI also produces the PES1-M, a
surface-mount DC-DC converter which
provides an isolated 1W output. 
The PEM and PES series incorporate a
number of design and manufacturing
improvements to previous generations of
converters, providing for improved efficiency
and thermal performance. Overall efficiency
has been raised to as much as 89% at full
load. The new design also enhances the
devices’ performance across the load curve,
reducing power consumption at light-load
and no-load conditions, making these
converters ideal for use in mobile and battery-
powered devices.
The PEM converters are housed in a compact,
industry-standard seven-pin SIP package
measuring 19.6mm x 7mm x 10mm, and the
PES1-M in an eight-pin package measuring
12.7mm x 8.3mm x 7.25mm. The PEM series
offers nominal inputs of 3.3V, 5V, 12V, 15V and
24V (±10%) and output voltage configurations of
3.3V, 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, 24V, ±5V, ±12V, ±15V,
and ±24V. The PES series offers inputs and
outputs from 5V to 24V or ±5V to ±24V.
To provide an additional layer of protection for
sensitive loads, the converters also come with
continuous short-circuit protection and 8kV of
ESD protection.

IR389x buck regulators: fast response to voltage transients
APPLICATIONS
The new devices are optimised for single-rail
operation from 5-12V inputs, or a 1-21V input
with an external 5V bias. Available in a 5mm x
6mm PQFN package, the regulators can
provide up to 4A per channel (IR3891) or 6A
per channel (IR3892) in a board footprint as
small as 165mm

.
The IR3891 and IR3892 feature a
proprietary modulation scheme that provides
for jitter-free and noise-free operation. This
enables the system to operate at high frequency
and high bandwidth for better transient
response. It also means that the power system
design needs fewer output capacitors, helping
to reduce the space it occupies.

Single-sided PCB designs using the IR3892 are
46% smaller than traditional designs using two
6A, single-output converters. The IR3892 also
works comfortably with dual-sided designs,
reducing PCB board size to less than 30% of
the space required in traditional designs.
The IR3891 and IR3892 also share features
that are common to the whole SupIRBuck
family, including pre-biased start-up, input
voltage awareness, over-voltage protection,
power-good monitoring, optional true output
voltage sensing and internal soft-start. Like the
rest of the SupIRBuck family, the two new
devices are qualified for industrial applications.

LITTELFUSE
Littelfuse has introduced the new low-
profile SMF series of Transient Voltage
Suppressors (TVS) which protect
sensitive electronic equipment from
spikes induced by lightning, and other
transient voltage events.
The surface-mounted SMF package of the
new devices has a footprint half the size of
TVS products in the SMA package. At just
1.1mm high, the new TVS devices provide an
excellent fit for the latest generation of thin
consumer and computing devices.
The SMF series satisfies the requirements of
IEC 61000-4-2 (IEC 801-2) for the ESD
protection of data lines, withstanding 8kV
(contact) and 15kV (air) peak voltages. The
peak transient power tolerance of 200W is
specified for a 10x1,000µs waveform, at a
duty cycle of 0.01%.
The devices also respond extremely quickly to
transient events, typically taking less than 1ns
to go from 0V to their minimum breakdown
voltage. They are also notable for their low
inductance and excellent clamping capability.

Vishay has extended its microBUCK
®
family of synchronous buck regulators
with a new device that enables the
design of circuits supplying a 5A
continuous output in a tiny 180mm

footprint.
The Vishay Siliconix SiP12108, which includes
high- and low-side power MOSFETs, is
housed in a miniature 3mm x
3mm QFN-16 package. It
features programmable
switching frequencies of up to
4MHz, enabling the use of a
very small output inductor and
other supporting components.
The device has a selectable
power-saving mode in which it
offers efficiency of 95% across
the entire load-current range.
Its current-mode constant on-
time regulation scheme
delivers fast transient response
with minimum output
capacitance and tight ripple
regulation over the entire load
range.
The SiP12108 offers an easy migration path to
devices supporting higher currents, and is also
footprint-compatible with the 3A SiP12107.
Since the regulator is stable with any capacitor
type and does not require an ESR network for
loop stability, system designs using the
SiP12108 are simpler than with many
comparable regulators.

ESD protection diodes protect NFC antennas

NXP Semiconductors has announced
a new series of diodes which protect
Near Field Communication (NFC)
antennas in mobile devices from
transient voltages.
The PESD18VF1BL and PESD24VF1BL are
18V and 24V bi-directional ESD protection
diodes. Housed in a small, leadless DFN1006-2
package, 1.0mm x 0.6mm x 0.48mm, the
new diodes can be accommodated in the
compact portable devices, such as
smartphones, which commonly include an
NFC interface.
In these products, the NFC antenna is often
integrated into the battery cover or the battery
itself, and is connected to the NFC transceiver
via small contacts. These contacts are an
entry point for ESD strikes, which are
potentially hazardous to the NFC controller IC.
The new NXP protection diodes safeguard the
NFC IC, providing protection specified by the
IEC 61000-4-2 industry standard.
At the same time, they help to maintain the
antenna circuit’s signal integrity, because the
diode capacitance varies very little with
changes in the bias voltage. The combination
of a high ESD voltage rating with low
capacitance variation provides the best
possible protection for the NFC system.
