Secondly, today’s Bluetooth devices such as
remote controls and mice often require a touch-
sensing input. With PRoC BLE, touch-sensing
control is fully integrated, and is
based on Cypress’s proven,
reliable capacitive sigma-delta
technology with GUI-based
configuration. The PRoC BLE
CapSense implementation
includes SmartSense Auto-tuning
and built-in two-finger gestures,
and provides market-leading
signal-to-noise ratio and water
tolerance.
The third advantage is the
built-in support for low-power
operation. Five easily configurable
power modes enable the
designer to optimise the system
design and prolong battery life.
The current in Deep Sleep mode
is just 1.3µA, and the device
draws an average of just 18.9µA
during a connection lasting 1s.
PRoC BLE is available in
56-pin QFN (7mm × 7mm) and
68-ball WLCSP (3.52mm ×
3.91mm) packages.
New high-voltage capacitive
touch-screen line driver
Microchip Technology has introduced a
stand-alone, integrated high-voltage line
driver, which designers can use to increase
the signal-to-noise ratio in advanced
projected-capacitive touch screens.
The MTCH652, which features an
integrated boost converter, can interface to
any touch controller via SPI to drive up to 19
Transmit channels at selectable voltages up
to 18V. An improved signal-to-noise ratio
makes the system more robust in noisy
environments, allows for the use of thicker
cover lenses, and reduces the number of
samples and the time required by the touch
controller to scan large displays.

includes a 12-bit ADC, eight PWM modules, 36
GPIOs, an LCD controller, and a choice of I

S interfaces.
Cypress has equipped PRoC BLE with a
royalty-free BLE stack and BLE profiles
conforming to the Bluetooth 4.1 specification.
The Cypress solution offers three advantages
over other manufacturers’ BLE offerings. First, it
supports PSoC Creator, an easy-to-use, fully
integrated design environment for developing,
programming and testing a BLE application.
This includes an intuitive graphical user interface
with which the designer can configure the BLE
protocol stack and the required Bluetooth
profile in minutes.
In addition, the PRoC BLE, which includes an
integrated balun, only needs two external
components, whereas competitors’ BLE
devices require as many as nine. This means
that the RF circuit and antenna matching
network are much easier to design when using
the PRoC BLE.

New generation of 8-bit megaAVR MCUs
adds features and improves analogue
ATMEL
Atmel has introduced a new generation
of low-power 8-bit megaAVR MCUs,
based on its AVR
®
enhanced RISC
architecture. The first part to be
introduced, the ATmega168PB, is
available now, featuring 16kbytes of
Flash, 512bytes of
EEPROM and
1kbyte of RAM.
Additional
versions – the
ATmega48PB,
ATmega88PB and
ATmega328PB – will
be released in the first
half of 2015.
All new MEGA PB
MCUs include an AVR
core running at 20MHz and
featuring low-power picoPower
Technology. They also feature a 10-bit,
15ksamples/s ADC, a rail-to-rail analogue
comparator, real-time counter, and an RC
oscillator accurate to ±2% over the full voltage
and temperature range.
The new megaAVR MCUs also offer a
number of features not found in the existing
range of megaAVR devices:
• Unique serial number readable from
application code
• Wake-up from Power-down mode on receipt
of data at the USART interface
In addition, the ATmega328PB
also offers:
• QTouch peripheral touch
controller for buttons,
sliders, wheels and
proximity sensing
• On-chip
debugging.
The new
megaAVR
controllers also
benefit from
improved
analogue
performance. For instance, at
±2% over the full voltage and temperature
range, the internal voltage reference is more
accurate. In addition, the analogue comparator
has a reduced offset at low signal levels, and
can deliver its result via GPIO.

Fixed-frequency buck converters
offer excellent transient response
DIODES INCORPORATED
Diodes Incorporated has released the
AP65550 and AP65450, synchronous
buck converters with maximum 5A and
4A current ratings which offer a very
fast response to transient voltages.
The devices’ specifications
include a wide input-voltage
range of 4.5-18V, which
means that they are suitable
for use in 5V, 9V and 12V bus
systems.
The AP65x50 devices’
fixed-frequency, 650kHz,
emulated constant on-time
control scheme enables them
to maintain a stable output
even when the input-to-
output voltage ratio is high. It
also means that power
circuits using the parts require
few external components,
and can use either SP-CAP
or POSCAP type capacitors
AP65550: 92% peak efficiency
with a low ESR, or ceramic capacitors with an
ultra-low ESR.
Alternating seamlessly between continuous-
conduction mode at higher loads and
discontinuous-conduction mode at lighter
loads, the AP65x50 converters offer unusually
high efficiency when supplying light loads. This
helps designers to comply with stringent
power-consumption regulations. Peak
efficiency is rated at 92%.
For synchronous-rectification designs, the
AP65550 and AP65450 feature a 65mΩ
internal high-side switch and a 36mΩ internal
low-side switch. To protect downstream
components from damage and premature
ageing, the converters offer a complete suite
of protection features, including under-voltage
lock-out, thermal shut-down, over-current
protection and programmable soft-start.

Magnetic contactless switch saves
board space with built-in capacitor
MELEXIS
Melexis has introduced an improved
version of its MLX92242 Hall-effect
switch/latch IC which enables easier
implementation and saves board space.
The MLX92242, which offers end-of-line
programmability and support for two-wire
operation, is widely used for position control
and position sensing, and as a contactless
switch. Accurately detecting the presence of a
magnetic field, it can be configured to switch in
magnetic fields ranging from 1mT to 64mT. A
magnetic latching range of -64mT to +64mT is
also achievable. The device’s built-in temperature-
compensation circuit counters the effects of
magnetic drift.
In the new version of the MLX92242, Melexis
has integrated a capacitor, so that the device can
be implemented directly into a design without
additional external components. The new
device is housed in the same industry-standard
TO-92/UA package as the original MLX92242.
The MLX92242 includes a Hall sensing
element, a voltage regulator accepting inputs of
2.7-24V, and a current sink-configured output
driver. It also features an EEPROM through
which end-of-line programming can be
executed, enabling the user to set magnetic
thresholds appropriate for the application.
In the new version of the MLX92242, the pin
ordering has been changed to provide for simpler
connection. The supply voltage and ground
pins are spaced 2.54mm apart so that they
match legacy fitting configurations, while also
simplifying assembly directly to lead frames and
insert-moulded connectors. This means that lead
forming, which could potentially compromise
the device’s operation, is not necessary.
As the MLX92242 permits two-wire operation,
as opposed to a conventional three-wire
arrangement, while still delivering full diagnostic
capabilities, a smaller wiring assembly is required.

New high-speed rectifiers offer excellent power density and efficiency
VISHAY
Vishay Intertechnology has introduced
27 new 4-10A FRED Pt Hyperfast and
Ultrafast recovery rectifiers, all housed in
the compact, low-profile eSMP
®
(TO-277A) series package.
Combining extremely fast and soft recovery
characteristics with low leakage current and
low forward-voltage drop, these AEC-Q101-
qualified rectifiers help designers to reduce
switching losses and over-dissipation.
The small footprint of the new devices
occupies a smaller PCB area than similar
rectifiers in DPAK packages. The FRED Pt
rectifiers also offer higher power density, helping
system designers to lower overall costs.

AVAGO TECHNOLOGIES
Avago Technologies has unveiled the
ACPL-302J, a smart gate-drive
optocoupler which integrates various
protection and monitoring features and
simplifies gate drive design.
The ACPL-302J features an integrated flyback
controller for DC-DC converters and a full set
of fail-safe IGBT diagnostics, protection and
fault reporting, providing a complete and cost-
effective gate-drive solution. With a 2.5A rail-
to-rail output, the device is ideal for driving
IGBTs and power MOSFETs in industrial power
inverters and motor drives.
By integrating the flyback controller, the
ACPL-302J allows for a more compact system
design, with fewer discrete components and a
small, efficient transformer placed next to the
device. The integrated design also minimises
the effect of EMI and noise-coupling between
IGBT channels.

The device also features an integrated active
Miller clamp, detection of IGBT desaturation,
