The Last Hour
a LARP for 35 players in 23 hours

A loved one lies in a coma, unable or unwilling to wake. Together, you will tell the story of the people in the
hospital room.
You will need a quiet room and a place for the patient to lie down perhaps a row of chairs or a couch.
Roles
The Patient
you will spend half of the game lying down, eyes closed. In a way this is your story, but it
may not be about you. You will decide how you came to be in a coma and whether or not you wake up.
The Partner
the Patient is your partner. You will decide how many years you’ve been together.
The Parent
the Patient is your child. You will decide whether there is another parent.
The Sibling
the Patient is your sibling. You will decide who was older.
The Friend
the Patient is your friend. You will decide if you were close or best friends.
Players not in the current scene are encouraged to play NPCs.
Select roles and take the card for that role. Answer the questions on the cards collectively, building up the past
together. Once that is done take a random question card (unless you are the patient) and announce your
answer to the group. The patient’s question is on their role card and they answer it at the end of play.
Each nonPatient character will have two spotlight scenes one in the present time and one flashback. They
may be present in more but should let the focus stay with the character who is spotlighted. The patient has a
flash forward scene to a future that could have been.
The Patient lays down with closed eyes, in a coma during the present scenes. They interact with the other
characters during the flash forward and flashback scenes.
The first scene opens in the hallway outside the patient’s room. The doctor (facilitator or other player) explains
the situation to the characters. The Patient has been comatose for nearly two weeks.
Doctor
“We haven’t been able to wake the patient. There was a small amount of neural activity in the
past week, but it’s been decreasing. I’m sorry I don’t have better news.” No hope is offered.

As you make decisions for your character, consider the following:
● The Patient has been comatose for almost two weeks how did you react to the news?
● Have you visited before? Why or why not?
● What have you never said to them that you should have?
● What is your history with the Patient? With the other people here?
● What is your biggest regret if they don’t wake up?
Details are up to you the parent or sibling could be biological, adopted or other. The partner could be one of
several in a polyamorous relationship, monogamous or other. The friend could be the patient’s expartner.
Relationships are unique and personal you decide.
When playing scenes in the present, please be mindful of the Patient’s inability to establish fiction. Any player
may pause or break for any reason.
