HERE’S TO HARDWORKING
shop owners!
I
f you’ve never worked retail, you
might be surprised at everything
that goes into running a successful quilt
shop: staffing, inventory, payroll, billing,
displays, planning, cleaning, organizing,
ordering, education, and countless hours
on your feet assisting the most important
part of your business—your customers.
I’ve been on both sides of the
business—as a store manager and an
employee, and as a shopper. As a shop
manager, I read every word of
Quilt
Sampler®
magazine for marketing, class,
and business tips and pored over the
photos for ideas on how to display fabric,
books, magazines, quilts, and more. As a
quilter, I’ve read it since its launch in 1995.
I loved how the photographs made me
feel as if I’d personally stepped inside each
shop; the beautiful photos of the quilts
inspired me to start (or at least dream
about) my next project.
Now that I’ve directed photo shoots
for
Quilt Sampler,
I have a whole new
perspective regarding the imagery in the
magazine—the hard work and dedication
the owners and employees go through to
make their shops extraordinary.
Readers and shop owners often ask us,
“What makes a shop extraordinary?” There’s
no magic formula for becoming a
Quilt
Sampler
shop. As you’ll see in this issue,
we have shops that feature modern fabrics,
while others lean toward the traditional.
Some have strong online businesses, while
others concentrate their efforts on their
brick-and-mortar storefront. Services,
locations, floor plans, and classes vary
among the shops.
The one common thread that runs
through each shop’s story is that the
owners are passionate about the business
they are in—and they have developed an
equally passionate team to provide the best
experience for the customers who walk
through the door or visit their website.
Each shop offers projects that inspire and
delight and employees who advise and assist.
So, no matter the square footage,
the number of bolts, the frequency of
newsletters, or the years in business, let’s
celebrate the local quilt shop owners and
all who make their businesses thrive!

put together using piecing and appliqué.
Improvisationally pieced skinny strips make a big impact
on a bold bed-size quilt.
A variation of a Log Cabin block and an Ohio Star block
team up in a simple yet striking throw.
Appliqué—either by hand or with fusible web—a wintry
medallion-style beauty.
A bed quilt with subtle metallic accents transitions
from light to dark and color to color.
Square-in-a-Square blocks create a Christmas tree
complete with fusible-appliquéd presents.
Finish easy-to-piece Dresden Plate blocks with a touch
of wool appliqué.
Combine solids, stripes, and strip-pieced segments
to build Log Cabin blocks layer by layer.
Simple, seasonal appliqués highlight pieced blocks
and thin sashing.
