Special Crochet Techniques
Crochet in Spiral Rounds:
Work the body and the lower part of the beak in spiral rounds (do not turn, do not join). Use
a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. Move the marker up each time you
start a new round.
Crochet in Rows:
Work all single parts of the wings, the tail feathers and the upper part of the beak in rows.
When you crochet rows, you need to turn your work, make one turning chain, if the next
row starts with a sc or a hdc and make two turning chains, if the next row starts with a dc.
The turning chain(s) does/do not count as stitch unless specified in the text.
Tapestry Crochet
Tapestry crochet is similar to regular crochet, except that one or more yarns are usually
carried while another is crocheted.
Tapestry crochet is often used when crocheting in the round, because it is nice to be able to
work all your color changes from the same side of the work.
Crochet the head of the parrot in tapestry crochet by using 2 colors. Carrying the second
color along top of single crochet being worked in. I do not carried the yarn over every single
crochet stitches, but over every second /third stitches. This technique creates floats (strands
of yarn) across the wrong side of the work but it will be less visible on the right side of the
work.
But you can also use tapestry crochet when crocheting ordinary flat rows that are turned at
the end of each row.
The upper part of the beak is worked in flat tapestry crochet, because this piece is worked in
flat (back and forth) rows.
Changing Color in Continuous Rounds
Work to the point where there are two loops of the last stitch before the color change
remaining on the hook. Drop the old color; yarn over and complete the stitch with the new
color.
Changing Color in Rows
Proceed the same as with
“Changing
Color in Continuous Rounds“.
But note that you have all working yarns on one side (= the wrong side) of the crochet piece.
Slst work completely.
Front/Back Post Stitches
You will use front/back post
stitches for the middle and
bottom parts of the wings.
How to crochet the first bpsc of
a row:
