The Wayward Wind…
am pleased to note that – just
for a change – this issue of
SAMI is full of wind. Not as full
as I had originally intended,
as David Francis’s 1/24
Typhoon has been carried over
until next month. This was to allow
him time to finish it in time for
Telford, and we will run the second
part as soon as possible. The
vagaries of print schedules once
again have contrived to confound
me, and this issue actually goes to
press on the day before Scale
ModelWorld at Telford. Leaving
out the article gave David a crucial
extra few days to finish the brute,
but I am sure it will be worth
waiting for.
So instead we have a spotlight
build of a kit I personally regard as
one of the year’s key releases – the
1/48 Revell Tornado IDS, another of
those astonishingly cheap yet
comprehensive pieces that has
become Revell’s hallmark, and
refreshingly not in 1/32 for those
who do not have the space for
anything too large. This kit is a
marvellous tooling, and confirms
Revell’s total command of The Fin in
all scales. Maybe they have a 1/24
one up their sleeve as well? Or
maybe in ‘The One True Scale…?’
So instead of a Typhoon we have a
Taifun, the Bf 108, another personal

and one can only wonder what else
he has lurking under his workbench
waiting to be finished. I certainly
hope we find out in due course.
All this ‘real modelling’ expertise
makes Yours Truly look bad, and I am
almost embarrassed to confess to
having finished another piece of ‘kit
assembly’. That it is a Hasegawa kit,
built almost from the box, makes it all
the harder to understand why it has
taken me two years to complete, but
there are many types of modeller and
I am one of those for whom the build
is just a means to an end, and readers
of Benchmarks will be familiar with
the strange and sometimes tortuous
routes by which I occasionally
manage to bring a project to fruition.
So our theme this month is wind,
starting with the usual blusterous
guff that constitutes the Editorial
column, and progressing through
Typhoon and Tornado, and pausing
only to note the winds of change
that have swept this house in the last
three decades or so and made such
an astonishing change to the hobby
since Mr Derbyshire first took a resin
cast from the nose of a Hawk Model
Spitfire.
And I hope we have, once again,
managed to include something of
interest or assistance to everyone –
because it is an ill wind that blows
nobody any good.

recently. We have not covered the
type since that kit’s release, and as
the Czech model industry has now
weighed in with decals and
conversions to allow almost any
Taifun ever to be modelled it seemed
an entirely appropriate subject for
this month’s Portfolio.
But as well as a superabundance
of hot air – none of it produced by Mr
Tony Grand who is as eloquent and
economical as ever in his loquacity –
we also have a mass of ‘how to’ and
techniques, starting from The Big
Build and going right through the
entire issue as usual. Sam Hall’s
Crusader will come as a breath of
fresh air to those of you not addicted
to the aftermarket, and the result he
has achieved with an affordable kit
and some modelling skills will be an
inspiration to many. Dave Hooper
and the WWI SIG continue apace
with their masterclass on Great War
modelling, and I am particularly
drawn to the piece by Mr Brian
Derbyshire in Classic Plastic on the
conversion of a Spitfire 21 in 1/72. It
seems to have been spread over
some thirty years, and the article is
almost a piece of archaeology in the
way it hacks through several strata of
kits and modelling techniques. It’s a
great read and a fascinating journey,
