Special Interests?
eaders will no doubt
stumble across the
occasional reference to
Scale ModelWorld in
this issue, and we make no
apologies for the coverage here,
as for a great many people it is an
event of enormous significance,
and as a showcase for how the
hobby can encourage and inspire
us when we engage with each
other it is second to none. My
own experience this year was
particularly positive thanks to
the many excellent encounters
with contributors and members
of the review team, and while my
shopping list was not even
dented, I managed to pick up
enough of what I didn’t really
need to keep the workbench
cluttered for the foreseeable
future.
But if you missed the big show,
then bear in mind there are plenty
more throughout the year, and this
magazine remains committed to
promoting the show circuit, through
show reports, our co-operation with
the fabulous 580 Modellers, and of
course the Show Award trophy – a full
explanation of which I am including in
the 'And Finally' section at the end of
this issue. Model shows are simply the
best experiences you can subject your
modelling self to – for the shopping for
starters, but nothing challenges your
skill set like displaying on a club table,

and seeing your
own work
through other
people’s eyes.
Never mind the
competitions;
simply putting a
model on a table
in public is a challenge to yourself that
I cannot recommend highly enough.
Which brings me to the crux of this
editorial. Our ‘How To’ series on
modelling WWI by Dave Hooper and
the Great War SIG has been
astonishingly well-received. The
series is due to finish soon, indeed this
issue’s instalment was carried over as
the SIG were preparing their amazing
display for Telford, but while it has
been running it has crossed my mind
that there must be other Special
Interest Groups with cheats and
shortcuts specific to their own subject
– not to mention sources of specialist
product from cottage industry
manufacturers catering for a limited
clientèle that newcomers would be
unlikely to stumble across. A look at
the SIG displays at Telford confirms
that there is a huge body of
specialised knowledge inherent in
every group, so I was pleased to be
invited to address the Branch and SIG
meeting, and to invite them to
consider contributing ‘How To’
articles on their own branch of
modelling to this magazine.
Being short of leg and lacking the
presence of Olympian Jove I have no
doubt my appearance was overlooked
by many, so I am taking this
opportunity again to invite all SIGs
and Branches – the real stars of every
model show - to consider sharing
their expertise and skills in these
