Note:
Prints are appropriate alternate
choices for this table setting and may be
substituted (see photo). For each napkin,
you will need one fat quarter. For the
appliqués you will need

and back you will need two fat quarters—
one each of two different prints.

Cutting for one PlaCe Setting
Machine-stitch on the lines. Remove
markings with a damp cloth.

From the quilted square, cut a
15-inch-diameter circle for the place
mat. Layer and quilt the 5
1/2-
inch
squares for the coaster in the same
manner. Cut a 4
1/2
-inch-diameter
quilted circle for the coaster.
3.
From the 17-inch square of fabric
#4, cut 2
1/8
-inch-wide true-bias strips
to bind the outer edge of the place mat
(Figure 1). Using
1/4
-inch-wide seams,
stitch the strips together to make one
long piece. Press the seams open.

Arrange the 17-inch square of
batting on top of the 17-inch square of
backing fabric. Place the 17-inch square
of Fabric #8 on top, face up. Use an air-
or water-soluble marking pen to draw a
1-inch grid on the top square of fabric.
Pin the layers together for quilting.

in Figure 2. Fold the strip in half with
wrong sides together and long raw
edges even. With raw edges even, stitch
the bias to the outer edge on the right
side of the place mat. Begin stitching
2 inches from the folded end. When
you reach the beginning, trim the excess
bias, leaving enough to tuck into the
folded end. Complete the stitching.

with tight-fitting lids
• Plastic or glass measuring cups
with 4-cup, 2-cup and
1/4
-cup
capacities
• Rubber gloves
• Large plastic stirring spoon
• Permanent fabric marking pen
• Plastic bucket to soak fabric in
prior to dyeing

Squeeze the water from the
soaked fat quarters.
7.
Pour 2 cups of the prepared dye
concentrate into the first 4-cup
container. Scrunch fabric #1 and
immerse into the container.
8.
Add 2 cups of water to the
remaining dye mixture. Stir. Pour
2 cups of this dye mixture into
container #2. Scrunch fabric piece #2
and immerse in container #2.
9.
Add 2 cups of water to the
remaining dye mixture. Stir. Pour 2
cups into container #3, scrunch fabric
#3 and immerse it. Continue in this
manner until you have immersed
the eight numbered fat quarters into
their respective containers. Cover
each container with its tight-fitting lid.
Leave fabrics in the dye containers
for six hours, turning them over every
30 minutes.
Note:
All tools used for dyeing fabric
should be reserved for that purpose
only. Do not use for food. Instructions
follow for preparing a run of eight
color gradations. Scrunching wet fabric
before immersing it in the dye results
in subtle mottling, giving more depth
to the dyed fabrics.

quarter of other fabric or dispose of it.

Rinse all fabrics in cold water
until the water runs clear. Dry the
fabrics and press to remove wrinkles.

Make a double narrow hem around

appliqués and 10 (4

the large heart appliqués. Trace a small
heart on each small square and a large
heart on each large square.

Following manufacturer’s
directions, apply the squares of fusible
web to the wrong side of each fabric
square. Cut out each heart.
11.
Remove the paper backing from the
hearts. Referring to the photo, arrange
hearts on the place mat, napkin and
coaster. Fuse in place following the
manufacturer’s directions.
12.
Place tear-away stabilizer on the
wrong side of the napkin, coaster and
place mat behind each appliqué. Attach
an open-toe embroidery foot to the
sewing machine and adjust for a short,
narrow satin stitch. Satin-stitch over
the raw edges of each heart. Remove
the stabilizer.
13.
Fold the napkin diagonally and tie
the bias around it in a bow. Knot the
ends of the tie.

sure your print settings are set to print at 100
percent and page scaling displays “None”.
