Regularly scheduled guided tours of Ljubljana, departing from the square in
front of the Town Hall, include the major attractions of the historical city centre.

Take the funicular to Ljubljana Castle and enjoy magnificent views of the city.
The lower station is located in the Krekov trg square, across the street from the
Ljubljana Central Market. The difference in height between the lower and the
upper station is around 70 metres.
Hours of operation: 9:00-23:00 from 1 May to 30 September, 10:00-21:00 from 1 October to 30
April. The funicular runs every 10 minutes.

Tourist road train
The tourist road train runs between the city centre and Ljubljana Castle. It
departs every hour on the hour from the Stritarjeva ulica street and every hour
at 20 minutes past the hour from the castle hill.
Hours of operation: 9:00-21:00 from May to September, 11:00-19:00 in April, October and
November.
The digital tour guide shows you different routes to 17 major sights of Ljubljana
and teaches you a number of useful Slovenian phrases to help you get around.
The tour takes about two and a half hours. Digital players, available for five-hour
hire, can be hired from Ljubljana’s Tourist Information Centres. Language options
include Slovenian, English, German and Italian.

The tourist boat, departing from the Ribji trg pier at the Cankarjevo nabrežje
embankment, takes you on a ride under several of Ljubljana’s famous bridges.
The ride takes about one hour.
Schedule: daily at 12:00 and 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March (guided boat tours), daily at
13:00 and 15:00 from 1 April to 31 October (non-guided boat rides).
Your Urbana card entitles you to one hour of free internet access at the Slovenian
Tourist Information Centre.
Opening hours: 8:00-21:00 Monday to Saturday from June to September, 9:00-17:00 Monday to

The City Museum of Ljubljana is the focal point for knowledge about Ljubljana’s
historical development from a prehistoric lake dwelling existing in 4500 BC to a
modern urban city.
The Museum’s permanent exhibition, Faces of Ljubljana, shows the city both
as a living space and an economic, political, administrative and creative centre.
Ljubljana’s story is not presented in chronological order, but through a series of
self-contained thematic sections showing the city and its inhabitants in different
periods of history.

The Slovenian History exhibition on view at Ljubljana Castle provides an
overview of the history of Slovenian inhabited areas from prehistory to the
present day.

The National Museum, located in a centrally located neo-Renaissance palace
built between 1883 and 1885, keeps numerous important treasures of the
world’s cultural heritage. One of the most outstanding is the 47,000 year old
Neanderthal flute from the Divje Babe excavation site.

The Museum is housed in an 18th century Baroque manor situated in Tivoli Park.
Its permanent exhibition depicts the history of Slovenians from 1914 to 1991.

The Museum keeps permanent collections of geological and paleontological
items, minerals, molluscs, insects, birds, reptiles, and fishes. Visitors can
also view various herbarium collections, a presentation of the olm (Proteus
anguinus), and alpine wetland and forest dioramas.

The Museum of Post and Telecommunications, a separate department of the
Technical Museum of Slovenia, houses various collections relating to the history of
post and telecommunications, an exhibition on women telegraphers and telephone
operators of the past, and a special section dedicated to the youngest visitors.

The Museum houses various collections relating to forestry, woodworking,
hunting, fishing, electrical engineering, smithing, textile engineering, printing,
agriculture and transportation. Other attractions include a watermill, a historical
sawmill, a reconstruction of an early 20th century veneer shop, a Venetian
sawmill, presentations on the wheelwright’s and baker’s trades, and much more.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 8:00-16:00 (10:00-18:00 in July and August), Saturday

The National Gallery houses two permanent collections, namely Art in Slovenia,

Ljubljana Zoo, currently home to 428 animals of 113 different species, is situated
in the beautiful surroundings of a natural forest. It has an area of 19 hectares
criss-crossed with 6.5 kilometres of winding footpaths offering views of both
animals native to Slovenia and attractive exotic species.

The Museum of Modern Art is Slovenia’s national museum of modern and
contemporary art, whose permanent collections, covering the period from
1950 to 2000, feature a representative selection of works by Slovenian artists.
The museum also presents contemporary artistic practices and organizes
retrospectives, international exhibitions, and a variety of other events related to
contemporary art.

Museum housing a collection of fine art prints from the 20th century to the

The Volčji Potok Arboretum is Slovenia’s most visited botanical attraction.
Covering an area of 80 hectares, it is home to around 2,500 different tree
and shrub species. Its plant collection, which includes several rare biotic
communities, is laid out as a landscape park.
In the last few years, the Arboretum has become particularly famous for its
spring flower shows, attracting visitors from around Slovenia and abroad with
millions of daffodils, tulips and other spring flowers.

8:00-18:00 from 1 to 27 October, 8:00-16:30 from 28 October to 30 November. Closed from 1

The Ljubljana Botanic Garden, founded in 1810, is Slovenia’s oldest running
cultural, scientific and educational institution. It displays over 4.500 plant
species, subspecies and varieties, a third of which are native to Slovenia and the
rest introduced from various parts of Europe and other continents.
Opening hours: 7:00-19:00 from April to October (7:00-20:00 in July and August), 7:00-17:00
from November to March.
