HUNTED BY A PACK
As Daphne stood on the stage, she blinked nervously,
her eyes almost hidden behind her thick glasses. She
had stumbled as she walked out and a few people
in the audience had laughed. The presenters of the
show asked her a few questions about her life. She
was 47 and enjoyed gardening, she replied. Then the
lights went down and she started to sing. Instantly, her
age and ordinariness were forgotten as people heard
her voice. It was astonishing and, when she finished,
the audience stood up and applauded, whistling and
cheering until the judges had to stand up and ask
them to calm down. All three judges complimented her
singing although Michael, the cruel one, did mention
her old-fashioned clothes and hairstyle and suggested
she might want to change them before the next round.
Daphne returned home that evening and went to bed,
glad that she had had a chance to show off her talent
to the country but thinking more of the work she
would have to do in the garden the next day.
She awoke suddenly. The doorbell was ringing.
‘It must be the neighbours’ she thought ‘coming to talk
about the show’. She put an old dressing gown on over
her pyjamas and, not caring that her hair unbrushed,
went downstairs to open the door. Outside, a pack of
journalists, photographers and TV cameramen were
waiting, cameras held high. The noise was deafening
and their shouted questions impossible to hear.
She closed her door, with difficulty, and opened the
morning newspaper that had just been delivered.
There, on the front page, she saw a very unflattering
photo of herself staring back at her. She could still
hear the journalists outside as she started reading.
The article, while mentioning her singing abilities,
spent more time discussing her clothes, interests and
weight. It was horrible. Daphne returned to the front
door and, holding the newspaper in front of her, she
told the assembled pack what she thought of them.
Suddenly she noticed one man standing on some
flowers and, red with anger, she chased them all down
the path to the front gate.
When Daphne closed her door, she was happy that she
had been able to voice her opinions so forcefully. The
journalists had seemed like wolves at first but had run
like frightened rabbits! She was sure that they would
now leave her alone. Outside, the men and women
exchanged smiles. What a story! What great photos!
This would be front page news for weeks!

THE LEAGUE AGAINST CRUEL SPORTS
The League Against Cruel Sports was set up in the
1920’s. It’s aims were to stop the hunting of all animals
for fun. Organising fights between animals such as dogs
and cocks had been banned a hundred years earlier
but hunting was less easy to ban. Traditionally, such
sports were enjoyed by members of the ruling classes,
including the Royal Family. However, the organization
gradually increased support among ordinary people
by investigating cruelty and presenting the evidence
in newspaper articles and in television documentaries.
One way they did this was to join hunts as members
and then secretly film what happened, which made
people aware of how cruel such sports could be.
Finally, in 2004, they achieved their greatest success
when the hunting of all animals with dogs was banned
in the UK. However, their work is not over. They are
campaigning for other activities, such as shooting and
even greyhound racing, to be banned. However, even if
a time comes when the government bans all activities
which are cruel to animals, the organization will still
be needed. If they ever manage to completely stop all
cruelty towards animals, perhaps they will then try to
tackle a new form of hunting. Nowadays, we often see
journalists chasing a story to sell and showing little
respect for people’s privacy as they do it. Is it too much
to ask for this kind of ‘hunting’ to be banned too?
