SECTION A – RESEARCH STUDY (20%)

Four compulsory questions.
Read the following research outline carefully, and answer all four questions.
A 5-year-old child is asked, “Why is the sun hot?” The child replies, “Because it cares for us
and wants to keep us warm”. A researcher wishes to investigate why 5-year-old children
might reply to the question using terms such as ‘cares’ and ‘wants’, which imply some degree
of conscientiousness and desire. The researcher intends to ask a group of 20 children aged 5
years ‘why the sun is hot’, and then analyse children’s responses.
1) What might be the benefits of conducting such a research study?
2) What might the researcher be interested in, when analysing the information collected?
3) How might the researcher improve the study design? To address this question, think
about the population being tested and the question(s) being asked.
4) What might be the ethical implications involved in this study?

SECTION B – ESSAY QUESTIONS (80%)

You must answer TWO (2) questions from the list of six (6).
1. Do you think it’s a good idea to revise for exams while listening to music? Justify
your answer in terms of memory and other issues relating to psychology.
2. Most people know that regular exercise and a well-balanced diet is good for their
health, yet many people lead inactive lifestyles and over eat. Discuss the
psychological reasons for such choices and strategies the government, schools,
businesses, families, and individuals could implement to encourage greater
engagement in exercise and sensible eating.
3. Sports fans are regularly portrayed in the media as violent and thuggish and as an
example of negative human traits. Understanding the reasons for aggressive
behaviours can help psychologists identify ways to help prevent aggressive behaviour
in other social groups. Explain whether aggressive behaviour, such as sports fan
violence, is a result of being born aggressive or of the environment in which an
individual was brought up.
4. Different people are attracted to different career paths in life. Discuss why this might
be the case, drawing as much as possible on your knowledge of individual differences
and socio-economic background, which might include contemporary literature on
evolutionary psychology.
5. When you have an idea, do you have the idea first and then put it into words to
communicate it, or do you draw on concepts communicated in your culture first, to
make the idea in the first place?
6. In the future, it may be possible to identify the genes that cause disorders such as
Huntington’s disease and deactivate them. Outline the ethical issues that surround this
type of research.
