Having the December issue of
GSM
in your hands means we will
soon be waving goodbye to 2015—and what a milestone year
it has been for philately. Most importantly, we had the 175th
anniversary of the introduction of the penny post, followed soon
after by the anniversary of the world’s first postage stamps, the
Penny Black and the Two Penny Blue.
I wonder how Queen Victoria felt about seeing her image
on this world-leading invention—one can only hope she was
suitably amused. However, the Penny Black wasn’t the first time
the young Queen appeared on postal items. Almost four months
before the introduction of the Penny Black, Queen Victoria
married ‘her Angel’, Prince Albert. As we know, there is nothing
like a Royal wedding to get the memorabilia wheels turning,
however, in the days before commemorative stamps, industrious
entrepreneurs had to find even more creative ways of using the
post to mark these royal events. As such, illustrated letter sheets
and even parodies of Mulready envelopes were used to celebrate
(and poke fun at) the royal romance. Edward Klempka discusses
and illustrates many of these rare Victorian souvenirs inside this
month’s issue.
As well as being a big year for the history of stamps, 2015 was also
an important milestone for the biggest name in philately, Stanley
Gibbons Ltd. This year saw the 175th birth anniversary of a certain
Mr Edward Stanley Gibbons—born a mere six weeks after the
introduction of the Penny Black. We also had the 150th anniversary
of the first Stanley Gibbons catalogue (superbly discussed by
Hugh Jefferies in last month’s issue); the 125th anniversary of the
introduction of what would become
Gibbons Stamp Monthly
and,
finally, the 70th anniversary of SG’s trade title, the
Philatelic Exporter.
With so many important ‘milestone moments’ celebrated in
2015, it’s going to be a hard year to follow in terms of philatelic
anniversaries—2016 must be pulling at its collar and swallowing
heavily as it waits in the wings. But don’t worry; we will have plenty
to discuss in
GSM
next year. Just one of the important milestones
to be celebrated will be the 500th anniversary of Royal Mail. Of
course, this will be marked with several RM issues over the year.

store in its recently announced 2016 stamp programme—see this
month’s ‘GB News’ for more information.
