Dear Reader
If you turn to the ‘Newsdesk’ pages this month you will see that we
lead with the story of an amazing find of rare Chinese stamps in
the Cotswolds. Three unused blocks of the 1882 5ca. yellow-ochre
(SG 6), totalling 35 stamps in all, were discovered in an old cigar
box, which had been tucked away in a dusty attic for more than
100 years. As each stamp is currently catalogued at £19,000 in the
Stanley Gibbons Catalogue you get an idea of the significance of
this once-in-a-lifetime discovery. According to some experts, this
new find could realise up to US$1million when the stamps are sold
in Hong Kong in a few months’ time.
After their discovery the stamps were originally put up for sale
by a local non-philatelic auction house, which gave an estimate of
a mere £800 to £1000 for all 35 stamps. However, after some fierce
bidding by a small group of stamp dealers who were fortunate
enough to have been tipped off about the sale, the final price paid
rose to almost £80,000 with premiums.
We are used to Chinese stamps making big headlines over recent
years, but this one does make me think how many more rare
stamps are just sitting in an attic waiting to be discovered. Maybe I
should go into the house clearance business armed with the Stanley
Gibbons Catalogue.

account. I have discovered a wealth of information from Glenn
Morgan’s study of Harrison and Sons’ contribution to stamp
paper production and, thanks to Anthony Smith, I now have some
priceless information on the early stamp issue of Nauru, especially
concerning the King George V overprints. Elsewhere, Christer
Brunström has enriched my knowledge of the post-war local
Posts of Brandenburg and I have learned valuable new details on
Victorian postal stationery wrappers, thanks to Michael Peach and
his detailed article on the subject.
