The firearm you have on you is the only one that matters.
Whether it be
a handgun with voluminous power and capacity tuned to tip-top shape and performance
or a bone-stock pocket gun with no modifications or specialized features, you must
actually carry the gun you have for it to matter. No ifs, ands or buts.
I know that this seems like an obvious fact, but I am consistently disturbed by how of-
ten I hear from CCW permit holders that they do not carry every day. Reasons (excuses,
really) range from the hassle of consistently doing it to the discomfort of their selected
firearm, carry rig, etc. My response is universal—get over it, address the issues that are
preventing you from carrying and pack that firearm with you at all practical/legal times.
If a deadly threat presents itself and you do not have the means to defend yourself
(through a lack of follow-through or effort), that will be a truly unfortunate situation.
So, what constitutes the “perfect” pocket pistol, the one you will carry with you at all rea-
sonable times? There is no simple answer. It is different from person to person, based on
their situations and needs. While a small 1911 in .45 ACP might be a right fit for one user,
an ultra-compact .22 Magnum North American Arms mini-revolver might be the right choice
for another. You must assess your capabilities, needs and abilities and make the decision.
To describe this as daunting would be an understatement. Even to seasoned shoot-
ers, the myriad choices out there in guns, holsters, ammunition and accessories can be
overwhelming. And, if you are new to the subject, it can be even more intimidating. With
chamberings ranging from rimfire .22s to the most powerful centerfire big bores, the
options are dizzying. Want a holster? Do you need an inside-the-waistband, outside-the-
waistband, ankle, shoulder or pocket rig? How about accessories? Do you need a laser
on your carry gun? It would be easy and understandable to just throw up your hands and
give up on the whole subject.
