Welcome
I’m currently sat 23 floors up in a hotel in
Hong Kong after spending my past week
‘north of the border’ in mainland China.
You may wonder why I’m mentioning
this, and it demonstrates that no matter
what we do, toy soldiers are never far
from our minds. I was in China this
week for my ‘proper job’, inspecting and
negotiating with two packaging factories
my company is currently working with
(exciting I know). For the four days I was
there though I was constantly wondering
how many toy soldier factories were
nearby.
Since the ‘explosion’ of toy soldier
production in China, starting in the 80s
with the likes of King & Country and
Frontline, and more recently with brands
such as First Legion, I couldn’t help but
wonder how close I was to the toy soldier
mecca. I'm fully aware that the factories
these companies now use are spread far
and wide across China, but equally I know
that Shenzhen (where I happened to be
for part of my trip) just over the border
from Hong Kong is where a majority of
the figures used to be made. Maybe on
my text trip I’ll track one down and go and
see some of the figures being made ‘up
close and personal’.
For now though, I can at least get a feel
for what goes on inside the Chinese
factories thanks to Cold Steel Miniatures
and Centurion Toy Soldiers founder
Iwan Williams, as if you turn to page 54,
contributor George Phillips interviews
Iwan and the article is supported by
numerous photographs of figures and the
Centurion shop, but most interestingly,
images (see above) of Cold Steel figures
being made in one of the Chinese
factories!
Anyway, enjoy that article, along with
everything else we’ve crammed into this
issue and so long as my flight back to the
UK tonight goes ‘according to plan’, I’ll see
you all back here in another two months
for some more toy soldier-related fun.

Scandinavian soldiers update
Last issue I mentioned a new range of
figures from Toy Soldier of Scandinavia
and true to his word, founder of the Dan-
ish company, Jakob Bredahl-Kjær, kindly
sent in a couple of sample figures for me
to take a look at. Unfortunately, I didn’t
have space for them in the reviews sec-
tion so you’ll have to allow me to ‘break
the rule’ and give them a quick review
here instead.
The figures come from the 1864 range
which focuses on the Danish-Prussian
war of 1864, a slightly unusual subject,
but given that the BBC has reportedly
just bought the rights to show the 1864
TV mini series, it could well be very
smart planning from Jakob. If, like me,
this is not one of your ‘periods’, a brief bit
of online research taught me the basics.
The war commenced on February 1 1864
when Prussian forces crossed the bor-
der into Schleswig, a principality which
would overlap the current German
Danish border. Denmark fought Prus-
sia and Austria. Like as had happened in
the previous war (1848–51) it was fought
for control of the duchies of Holstein
and Lauenburg due to the succession
disputes concerning them when the
Danish king died without an heir accept-
t-
able to the German Confederation. The
war ended on October 30 1864, when
the Treaty of Vienna caused Denmark’s
cession of the Duchies of Schleswig, Hol-
l-
stein, and Saxe-Lauenburg to Prus-
sia and Austria.
As for the figures, they are well pro-
duced 1:30 scale pieces in a very similar
style to W. Britain or King & Country (not
t
surprising given TSOS are also a K&C
stockist). The figures shown are a Dan-
ish officer and a Prussian infantryman
(both are priced around £23 at current
exchange rate). If the period has sparked

GNM latest
Graham Mollard, the driving force behind GNM Miniatures,
always has something new and exciting on display at the
London show and this June was no different. In fact, this
piece was so exciting (or should that be large) that we didn’t
even want to attempt moving it to our usual photography
booth!
This large and striking new piece (or rather pieces) rep-
resents Austerlitz 1805 when the Chasseurs a Cheval with
the Mameluks, led by Lassalle, attacked the Russian Royal
Cuirassiers and the Tsar’s Royal Guards. Figures are avail-
able as either individuals or as pairs on a base and numerous
combinations are possible. The pairs with the base are £200
whilst single figures are £100.

Trophy Heritage
In one of first issues of this magazine
we featured on the cover a WWI bus by
Trophy Miniatures of Wales. Founder
of Trophy, Len Taylor, retired a number
of years ago and sold the rights to his
figures, moulds and the entire business to
Ken Jackson, owner of Maison Militaire
and Heritage Miniatures. For the past
few years, Ken has continued supplying
certain Trophy figures to a key (non-toy
soldier-related) customer in the US but
now I’m pleased to see him beginning to
bring Trophy back to the hobby under the
updated brand name of Trophy Heritage.
Ken’s first step back into the toy soldier
hobby is by reissuing the original Trophy
WWI bus (green variant), as well as two
new versions: a Royal Naval Division
variant in blue and an Indian Contingent
variant in the original red livery (prior to
the change to khaki). All feature the lower
deck boarded up and each bus will come
with a seven-figure crew (sadly these
weren’t quite ready in time to be pho-

Empire Open Day
Malcolm Watson, owner of Empire Military Miniatures,
has been in touch to say that EMM will be holding its first
‘dealer open day’ on Saturday September 12 2015 at Magpie
(Manchester House) in Evesham. I am reliably informed (by
Malcolm of course) that you will want to visit as EMM will be
launching a totally new range at the open day. This will be the
only time collectors will have chance to view this range before
the London show in December. In addition to this, EMM will
have all of its most up to date diorama boards that will feature
all current and new releases since the June show, in addition
to a number of living history personnel, all dressed authenti-
cally, who will be on hand to discuss the uniforms, battles of
the period, kit and much more.
As well as all of this there will be special offers on the day
and two ‘targeted’ talks as well as a chance to view a number
of pre-production pieces due for release between the event
and the start of 2016. Keep an eye on www.empiremm.co.uk

More scenery
For those of you that prefer a little bit of scenery to help display
your figures then JG Miniatures has some new grass mats
available as well as new versions of some old favourites.
There are two new mats available, both classed as ‘short
grass’ and they’re available either with tank tracks (TM14 £36)
or without (TM13 £30).

Sometimes we come across, or get told about, a website worth
taking a look at and www.historymadesmall.com is one of
those sites. Specifically focused on diorama creation, it’s
certainly worth a bit of your time when searching the web if
nothing else to have a look at Pastor Gary Tangeman’s excel-
lent photography skills which capture his miniature creations
perfectly.
