EDITORIAL
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR….
y the time that you read these
words, you may well have
attended the world’s biggest
plastic modelling show in Telford.
Run by the UK branch of the
IPMS, Scale Modelworld is the final hurrah
of the year, drawing a close to both the
show season and in may ways, our planned
block of magazines for 2015. As this is the
December issue, we can now look forward
to the new year ahead and try and work out
wheat to build and what to publish for you to enjoy. But first there
is Scale Modelworld to enjoy! So, did you enjoy the event? Did we
meet up and have a chat? If so, did you enjoy speaking to us and
exchanging some ideas? What did you think of the competition -

wasn’t ‘Best In Show’ amazing?!
Preparing for the show is always a heady combination of expectation
and fear; an expectation born of excitement that we will see excellent
models, meet friends old and new and buy some of those treats that
we’ve saved up for all year; the fear comes from trying to get everything
done on time! As I’m writing this editorial, there is still ten days left to go,
but I’m already feeling the pressure of having to complete this issue and
also prepare my models for the various displays that I’ve promised to
support. It will no doubt be done - as by now you will have seen! - but the
pressure is palpable, nonetheless…
Scale Modelworld is a truly huge event. This year’s will have covered
all of the available halls, as well as the second floor that was used for the
first time to house the model competition. Within the main exhibition halls
there are the incredibly diverse range of club stands, Special Interest
Groups (SIGs) and trade stands and manufacturer’s displays. Seeing
Modelling can be such a solitary pursuit and it’s often
only the local club or shows such as this one, that bring
likeminded individuals together

thousands of models can certainly be a heady experience, but with time and no little
stamina, one can get around most of the stands to top up on not only the inspiration
needed to build another model, but also kits, tools and all manner of other supplies
to do so once suitably inspired! It’s also the place to see what will be released
over the coming twelve months, Airfix in particular taking the opportunity to release
details of their exciting new kits.
But what I enjoy most at these events is the chance to meet up with friends old
and new. Modelling can be such a solitary pursuit and it’s often only the local club or
shows such as this one, that bring likeminded individuals together. Sure, there’s the
Internet, Facebook, online forums and the like that can create a sense of community,
but there’s nothing quite like actually meeting someone and discussing their work
face to face to get the juices flowing. Laughs can be exchanged, arguments can be
had, ideas passed on and models actually held and looked at in the round - it’s really
the only way to see what the hobby is all about and how those around you enjoy it.
This year will have been no different. Having had friends that I haven’t seen
since last year stay over will of course have been a pleasure, but it is perhaps the
chance to meet our readers for the first time as editor of this magazine that will
have been the most pleasing. As a modeller who is in the spotlight, being able to
meet modellers who are both readers of the magazine and fans of the work that we
produce, is definitely something that we see as an important part of the job. Often
we meet up with modellers who are shy about talking to people that they see in
magazines ands so it is great that we can reassure them that we are not rock stars,
just ordinary people that are fortunate to be able to make a living from a job we
enjoy. But trust me when I say this: I feel exactly the same when I meet someone
that I admire!
So with Scale Modelworld over for another year, we can move on and begin to
work on new models. I’m already planning some new builds that will include the new
Italeri 1:32 Mirage III, Tamiya Mosquito and Trumpeter F-106, but who knows what
else will cross my desk over the coming months. One thing is for sure: just as I am
now looking forward to what will be once again a memorable show with excitement,
so I am, the arrival of new and hitherto unknown kits and other products that make
this hobby and my job, so wonderful.

his month sees us deviate slightly from the norm to bring you
a reference feature, build and detailed look at the delightful
F-5B in it’s many incarnations. Forming the backbone of
countless airforce training schools over the years, the
chance to take a look at this aircraft was one that we
grabbed with both hands! Not only was it a chance to build the Kinetic
kit, it was also a chance to move away from grey jets for a while and
look at something carrying a little more colour - we hope that you
approve!
Along with our look at the F-5, we are also wrapping up this year’s
in-depth series of features on the Battle Of Britain with a look at the
new Airfix Spitfire Mk.I, we look at the spectacular F-16XL and classic
Supermarine Scimitar in 1:48 and then wrap up our builds with a truly
worn out Sally in 1:72 and a stunning rendition of the Wingnut Wings
Fokker E.III in 1:32. Something for everyone we think!
