WITH just over 60 toy-
related lots in the Fine Art
and Collectors Auction
at Chilcotts in Devon last
month, there was a neat
range of diecast from
firms like Dinky, Matchbox
and Corgi, some of which
tipped slightly over their
top estimates.
Out of the Dinky lots,
it was a trio of trucks
that performed the best
– something that can
often be said of Dinky
sections, as collectors do
love a good truck. Taking
the crown was a Dinky
Supertoys No. 923 Big
Bedford Van ‘Heinz’ in its
original striped box. With
an estimate of £100 to £150,
the beans lorry trumped
that and the hammer went
down at £180.
Another
truck
that
delivered on its estimate
was a Dinky Supertoys No.
942 Foden 14-Ton Tanker
‘Regent’, also in its original
box. With a valuation of
Dinky Supertoys No. 923
Big Bedford Van 'Heinz'.
£100 to £150, the auctioneer
said ‘tank you’ at £160. Finally
from the successful Dinky
section was a Supertoys No.
905 Foden Flat Truck with
chains in green and with its
original box. It realised £150,
which was £30 over the top
estimate.
However,
the
highest
item in the sale was our old
favourite
James
Bond,
courtesy of the iconic Corgi
Toys No. 261 James Bond’s
Aston Martin DB5 in gold
with a red interior, complete
with figures and the Secret
Instructions, spare bandit
and lapel badge. Estimated
at £100 to £150, Bond had
the bidders in his sights and
it sold for £220.

This absolutely superb mid 20th century Austin J40 pedal car with its original wheels, tyres
and chrome hubs was the star toy lot at Biddle & Webb last month. With an opening bonnet
and boot, this must have been the ultimate children's toy when first released. Estimated at
£1,000 to £1,200 clearly someone fancied taking it for a spin, as it sold for £1,700.

SELLING FOR
A REASON
YOU know a collection
must
be
important
when Vectis Auctions
dedicates two days to
selling it and gives the
sale its own catalogue.
Therefore
when
the
two-day Mike Reason
Collection of diecast
models went under the
hammer last month
there was a definite
sense of anticipation.
The sale included
more than 1,500 lots
featuring Dinky, French
Dinky,
Corgi,
Tri-ang,
Spot-On, Matchbox, Tekno,
Marklin… well, the list
goes on but you get an
idea of 65-year-old Mike’s
broad collecting habits.
However, this wasn’t the
first time that Mike had
sold a collection and after
starting the hobby in the
1970s, after about eight
years of buying, he decided
to flog the lot and start
from scratch. A bold move!
Over the years Mike
was a firm believer in
displaying his collection
and this was one of the
reasons behind the decision
to sell because Mike is due
to downsize and didn’t want

might have needed a bit of a clean.
The most expensive lot in the auction at Vectis was this
Dinky Toys Gift Set No. 4 Racing Cars, which was in
overall excellent condition.
the models just stored away
in the loft. However, another
reason is due to Mike’s other
hobby – collecting real classic
cars – and he wanted to use
the proceeds to build new
garages for his 1954 Triumph
TR2, a 1964 Ford Galaxie
500XL and a 1953 Buick
Special.
And it certainly looks
like Mike’s ambition will
be achieved after the total
amount raised (including
buyer’s premium) came to
£150,000. The number one
item in the two-day sale was
a Dinky Gift Set No. 4 Racing
Cars, including a No. 23f
Alfa Romeo (red, racing No.
8), No. 23g Cooper Bristol
(green, racing No. 6), No. 23h
Ferrari (blue, racing No. 5).
No. 23j HWM (light green,
racing No. 7) and No. 23n
Maserati (red, racing No. 9) –
all had a white driver, ridged
hubs and grey tyres. In
overall excellent condition,
the set was estimated at
£300 to £500 but sold for a
whopping £1,100.
The next big seller was
actually the next lot and was
also a Dinky Toys Gift Set,
this time a No. 149 Sports
Cars Gift Set including No.
107 Sunbeam Alpine (dark
cerise, racing No. 34), No. 108
MG Midget (cream, maroon
interior racing No. 28), No.
109 Austin Healey (orange,
racing No. 21), No. 110 Aston
Martin (green, racing No. 22)
and No. 111 Triumph TR2
(pink, racing No. 29). All had
a white driver and were in
excellent to excellent plus
condition
(although
may
have benefitted from a light
clean). With a valuation of
£500 to £700, the Sports Cars
set realised £1,000.
On level pegging with the
above lot was a Corgi Gift
Set that’s actually one of
our favourites, thanks to
the gorgeous illustrated
box. We’re talking about
Gift Set 38 Rallye Monte
Carlo containing a BMC
Mini Cooper S (red, white
roof, racing No. 52),
Citroen DS19 (light blue,
yellow interior, white roof,
racing No. 25) and Rover
2000 (maroon, red interior,
white roof, racing No. 136).
The overall condition was
near mint to mint and it
sold for £1,000 – just over
the top estimate.

on 20th November.
It will be a 600 lot sale
featuring the collection of
Rodney Count.

in the village of Fordham,
Cambridgeshire, and whilst
a very keen gardener, it was
clear from the moment we
stepped foot into Rodney's
house, that his main passion
was toy collecting.
“Rodney's
enthusiasm
began 50 years ago when his
wife Marion, after travelling
to her native Scotland,
brought back a single toy as a
present for Rodney.
Meccano teamed up with students
to build a 100ft Meccano bridge
across Belfast's Clarendon dock.

their interest with a passion
as they regularly visited
toy fairs, swapmeets, steam
rallies and toy auctions,
buying a diverse range of
toys but with a strong liking
for tinplate toys. However, as
the collection begun to grow,
other toy categories begun
to enter the frame, and these
include Dinky Toys, Corgi
Toys, Matchbox, Spot-On,
Britains, British and German
tinplate and much, much
more!” Although the auction
will feature toys taken from
all the categories mentioned
above, a large proportion of
the sale will focus around
tinplate toys from around
the globe.
A recent survey suggests
51% of British men still
own their childhood teddy!
There will be around 600 lots in the
Rodney Count single owner collection at
Lacy, Scott & Knight in November.

Plans for the 2016 International N Gauge Show are already
underway, following a successful event on 12th and 13th
September at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre. More than
3,000 people attended the show, which included 26 layouts
depicting American, steam and modern layouts alongside four
of the leading societies for N Gauge enthusiasts and more than
40 specialist suppliers who showcased their latest models and
products. As a result the joint organisers, Meridienne Exhibitions
Ltd. and the N Gauge Team, have announced that next year the
show will once again take place at the Warwickshire Exhibition

PEDALLING FOR POUNDS
Two Austin J40 pedal cars topped the bill at Halls last month,
after attracting interest from collectors across the country. Fondly
known as the Joy Car or Junior Austin, the car was manufactured
from 1955 to 1971 by disabled miners at a factory in the village of
Tiryberth, near Bargoed in South Wales. The car was built at the
instigation of Lord Nuffield, owner of BMC, soon after the Second
World War and were sold in Austin salerooms for £20, which was
a considerable price at the time. The £20 grew to £1,500 as fine
art auctioneers Halls sold one example, which had been restored
to pristine condition by a former Shropshire motor service parts
manager. A second example, which needed restoration, found a
new home for £700 to the delight of the Shropshire owner who
also sold two 1950s Tri-ang Ford pedal cars 1950s, which required
major restoration, for £150.

Wessex Auction Rooms is set to sell
a collection of 300 Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles figures.
Toy maker Character Options has announced it's set to release two
limited edition Doctor Who figures based on the character Missy,
as played by Michelle Gomez. The Missy figure will be available
in two variants; a purple outfitted version with hat from the series
finale episodes; and alternatively in her ‘Heaven’ outfit, hatless
with black jacket and manic grin. The Missy figures have 18 points
of articulation and are highly detailed and decorated. Each figure
head can also be swapped so that both heads can be incorporated
with either outfit, and they both come with accessories. Both
versions of Missy will be limited to 4,000 units and are available
in exclusive UK packaging from

There’s no doubt that Hot Wheels has pulled off the shape
of the Batmobile, as seen in the blockbuster videogames
but for that price you’d expect some more ‘play’ features
and perhaps a little less plastic. Still, Batfans are sure to

Just as we were heading to print, Tim Weeks of Wessex Auctions
got in touch to let us know about an extremely interesting
collection that will be sold at the auctioneer on 27th November.
The collection is 300 original run Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
all on their original card backs from a retired toy shop owner.
Tim described it as "mind blowing". With Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles currently going through a popularity spike, this could could
certainly be an auction to watch out for.
TAKE SLOT RACING TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Well, it seems apt that just as we have a history of Scalextric
in this issue (pg. 22) the iconic maker announces another new
innovation. This time it's working with another company (Slot.it)
on Pro Chassis Ready (PCR), a brand new concept that allows slot
car enthusiasts to customise their racers by installing and running
performance parts. You can install a variety of new motors, as well
as upgraded gears and wheels to improve the car's performance
and create the ultimate Scalextric car... particularly useful if you
race to tournament level.
