100ASA film I could not only afford to buy, but
also afford to get processed. Plus there was the
agony of waiting for said photographs to printed
off, to see if you had captured ‘that image’, or you
had messed it up! Ordinary prints you could get
back in a couple of days via mail order, or if you
were particular impatient, same day processing
was available at a price! For those ‘special shots’ I
always tried to have a roll or two of Kodachrome
64 on hand, which had to be processed by
Kodak via the mail, and the wait for the ‘yellow
box’ of slides to drop through the letterbox was
agonizing!
But back to this month and as always we have
another feature packed issue for you
which I hope you enjoy, as we have
an eclectic mix of old and new that I
hope you will find entertaining and
informative. So if you are off to an
airshow, happy snapping, if not –
happy modelling!

Model Aircraft Extra -
his year’s airshow season is now well and
truly established, and despite the sad
events of last year, it is still flourishing. It’s
a great way to get out and photograph
the objects of our fascination and to lay
down references for future projects. Sadly the
‘heyday’ of the UK’s packed military airshow
calendar is a thing of the past, as I can remember
not too far back when we had plenty of RAF
bases, each hosting a show, or at least a ‘families
day’ that you might get an invite to! Names
such Finingley, Alconbury, St Mawgan and even
Fairford pre-RIAT days were places to plan and
head for! But whilst the number of venues may
have shrunk, perhaps the biggest
revolution for the airshow goer
and photographer has been the
Digital SLR camera, and the advent
of the ability to fire off as many
images as a memory card will hold!
Again, it seems a scant few years
ago that, being on something
of a budget, I had to ration the
amount of images I could take, to
how many 36-exposure rolls of
