NME
AWARDS HAS
always
been the lairiest
night of the musical year.
There was the time, in 2006,
when The Cribs singer Ryan
Jarman was hospitalised
after throwing himself onto a table
covered in glasses and ended up
needing stitches in his back.
Then there was 1998, when The
Verve won four awards. Frontman
Richard Ashcroft refused to leave
his table to collect them, so
NME’s
then editor Steve Sutherland had
to hand-deliver the goods.
Liam Gallagher pulled the same
trick in 2001, forcing host Peter
Kay to bring the Hero Of The Year
award to him. “My mum’s looking
for that coat,” Kay said of Liam’s
white, fluffy number. In 2012,
Liam’s bro Noel accepted his
Godlike Genius award by saying
“You’re f***ing welcome” to anyone
who’d ever been influenced by him.
Then there was the time in 1998,
when Beck won Best Solo Artist
and sent in an acceptance video
of him in a Jacuzzi, surrounded
by his band wearing horse masks.
This year was just as rock’n’roll.
There were amazing performances,
drunken antics, unbroadcastable
behaviour and a set from Coldplay
befitting their Godlike Genius

For obvious reasons, this year’s
awards were dedicated to Brixton
boy David Bowie. But they were
also dedicated to Viola Beach, a
talented young band right at the
beginning of their careers, doing
what they loved, whose dream
ended way too soon.

for viola beach

Viola Beach – comprising of
members Tomas Lowe, Kris
Leonard, River Reeves and
Jack Dakin – were killed in a car
crash on Saturday, February 13,
along with their manager Craig
Tarry. Their vehicle plunged 80ft
off a bridge in Stockholm while
travelling to arlanda airport
following their first overseas gig
at Sweden’s Where’s The Music?
festival. The band’s debut single
‘Swings & Waterslides’, originally
released in august 2015, is set to
enter the Top 40 of the official UK
singles chart today. all proceeds
from the sale will go to the familes
of the band and their manager.
Tributes for the band have
poured in. Liam gallagher tweeted
a link to buy ‘Swings & Waterslides’,
signing off “RiP Lg X”. The Stone
Roses posted the song on Twitter,
along with a message urging fans
to get Viola Beach to number
one. The Courteeners’ Liam Fray
tweeted: “Heartbreaking news.
Watched them soundcheck in
December with us. They were
destined for big things.” The Cribs’
Ryan Jarman posted a series of
tweets, saying: “Heart goes out
to the Viola Beach guys and their
families... The sacrifice many
bands around the world make for
gig-goers every day – giving up
days for travelling... sadly, roads
and skies can be dangerous.” Billy
Bragg tweeted: “Tragic news. My
thoughts are with their families and
friends.”
