A COUPLE OF yEARS AGO
I was asked by documentary
maker Morgan Spurlock (the guy
behind
Super Size Me)
to appear
in his upcoming film about One
Direction. They’d just been voted
Worst Band at our annual awards
and
NME’s
Dan Stubbs had been
sent some brilliant tweets from
upset Directioners along the lines
of: “I AM GOING TO F**KING
SHOOT yOU IN THE HEAD WITH
A BAZUKA OR HOWEVER yOU
SPELL IT… THEN I’M GOING
TO DROWN yOU… I WILL TAKE
A CRAP ON yOUR FAT ASS…
yOUR PARENTS WILL BE HAPPy
BECAUSE THEy ALWAyS HATED
yOU”. Spurlock wanted some dirt.
How could I say no?
The interview lasted an hour. He
asked me about the crazy fandom,
the tight control of the band’s
image and a bit about why I thought
they were so successful. If you’ve
ever seen the film, you’ll know
it didn’t really turn out to be the
behind-the-curtain exposé most
people (me included) assumed
it would be when Spurlock
announced it. Whether Simon
Cowell’s presence as executive
producer had anything to do with
that, we can only speculate…
Which is just a big preamble
to everything getting a lot more
interesting since Zayn Malik flew the
coop and launched his solo career.
He’s doing what he likes, saying
what he likes and making music he
likes. He’s no longer the outsider in
the world’s biggest manufactured
band and as Gavin Haynes finds
out in this week’s cover story, he’s
got a brilliant tale to tell.
