The Bully Mindset
Practically everybody
has experienced some bullying
at school—either as the bully or the bullied. Humans
seem to have a primeval instinct to gang up on the
weak and enjoy a fleeting sense of power. Oddly, those
who were bullied themselves early in life sometimes
develop a tendency to bully others when they get a
chance. It continues into adulthood, when they may
torment spouses, children or subordinates at work.
In the 1960s my school had several noted bullies.
At the junior boarding house, there was a slightly older boy, whom I’ll
call Don. He was not the sort to beat you up or take your sweets away. I
was certainly stronger at age 11 than Don, 13, an asthmatic kid. But he had
a certain mental control over the other boys. He declared himself “first
fighter,” and nobody challenged it. For instance, if he was clean-bowled
at cricket, he could just announce “No ball” and continue batting. And if
Don took a dislike to you, he could get others to ignore you or call you
names, without doing the dirty job himself. He was a petty tyrant in our
little world, quite like Kim Jong-un or Hitler. Fifty years on, I sometimes
wonder what became of Don. Yet, thanks to him, I’ve been able to compre-
hend the bully mindset somewhat, which was a useful lesson to learn. So
I’d advise you to try and analyze any bully, be it your teacher, your boss or
a family member, and try to understand why he or she behaves that way—
never mind that our cover story’s focus is on keeping the children in your
family safer and happier.
“A Draconian Law” (page 56) is an opinion piece about our amended
sexual-harassment and rape laws. Some of you may disagree with its
author Rajiv Wagh, a lawyer and journalist. But I think Wagh’s bold argu-
ment needs to be heard when he concludes—despite his condemnation
of all the injustice Indian women endure—that we need to take a fresh
look at this law. It was passed in a hurry, when our collective conscious-
ness was understandably in depression. It has some serious flaws.
