Female quotas
Historically, model making is a male hobby, probably because we were
given toy soldiers or military vehicle kits, aircraft, cars whilst girls
were given dolls and stuffed animals.
This has been for a long time, apart some rare exceptions.
Lately instead, especially amongst figure makers, fair sex is establi-
shing itself and is coming out with an ever increasing presence but most
of all with skill and personality.
They paint and model like us. Better than us.
Surely a great help was given by the fantasy sector, many girls could
give free surge to their art without being limited by rigid regimental
colours. It’s surely a pleasure to exchange opinions and learn from this
skilled she modellers that with their natural sensibility manage to show
us the hobby from a different point of view. They are also imposing their
vision on the subjects produced by companies and this difference of
views is good for our hobby. If this is not enough, their presence at
shows, in the past almost exclusively for men, it’s one of the nicest news.
The increasing female presence may also have a positive effect, our
girlfriends will not snort anymore because we spend hours to paint or
go to shows, and they will not tell us off because we spend too much
money in kits. Finally, I salute you with a homage to the other half of
the sky, written by Denis Diderot: “when you write about women, you
have to dip the pen in the rainbow.”

Rainy Mountain Charlie

Sometime they come back, and luckily I add. We are talking about Julian Lamb, talented son of the
great Ray Lamb, founder of Poste Militaire, company that from the Seventies until its shutting in 2004
was a landmark for the quality of its figure but most of all for the incredible sharpness and cleaning of
its pieces. I believe that no one has ever reached the level of this company yet. But lets’ go back to
Julian, that has become a valid sculptor, especially of busts depicting native Americans. His pieces had
become rare, and the few appearing on the market reached astronomical quotations. Well, at the end
of 2013 Julian opened a ne company, Lamb & Flag Miniatures that in the course of 2014 will re issue
5 busts sculpted by him for his family company. I immediately placed an order for the bust that most
of all fascinates me, Rainy Mountain Charlie, that is the only one available at the moment alongside
the bust of the mother with child “Charlie’s Woman”. The bust is cast in resin (blanket, bust and head,
hat and stand) and white metal (feather, two plaits, pipe and two earrings). Let me say, I’ve never see
anything similar, the finesse of details, and the minimal thickness of the various resin and metal ele-
ments are incredible. Even more is the absolute absence of mould lines or pouring blocks, and when I
say absence I mean you only have to glue the pieces, forget sand paper, cutter, files, there is no need
for them!
I’ve seen a lot of figures in my life, but never something like this. I believe I won’t be wrong saying
that each piece is cleaned before packaging; otherwise I cannot imagine how it can be done. Would I
suggest it? Yes, definitely, for the beauty and the simplicity of the sculpting, for the finesse of details
and to admire how a piece is cast! Highly recommended!!!

MJ MINIATURES
The Battle of Hastings
1/10th bust resin
The last product of the Korean company is a wonderful bust of large dimensions sculpted by the talented Ju-won Jung, depicting a Norseman dragon bea-
rer during the Battle of Hastings. The dragons, originated in the steppes to give a clue of the wind direction to the archers, were then adopted and spread
with the Romans. The piece is made of 18 gray resin parts, without bubbles and with very few pouring blocks
to remove, all strategically simple to eliminate; it is included in the box also a brass rod for the pole. The sculp-
ting is noteworthy, both the bust, with a prominent belly that characterizes it, and the dragon, which head, but
even more the fabric tail are so realistic. Nice the face, chubby and well characterized, and the right thcknes
of the nose guard and of the other elements forming the helmet. The hand holding the pole will have to be
drilled with a bit of the correct diameter. If the bust is not enough, the generous Man-Jin Kim gives also four
brushes (one flat and three rounded) with every bust purchased, ready to be used to paint this sculpture.
It’s an original piece and imposing, we’ll see it often on contest tables thanks to its possibilities to have fun in
painting the various materials, like metals, leather and that incredible dragon tail: congratulations to MJM for
this wonderful new product.
