majestic
NeoPalladian
facade
of
the
National
Gallery
which
graces the
north
side
of
London's
Trafalgar
Square
is
not
only
one
of
the
city's
best-
also
houses
one
of
the
world's
greatest
art
collections.
Indeed,
for
many
visitors
the
National
Gallery
is
known
landmarks,
but
one
of
the
major
city.
attractions
of
this
great
capital
Other
galleries
throughout
the
world
may
have
much
larger
collections,
and
some
may
have
more
extensive
coverage
of
particular
periods
in
the
history
of
art.
but
none
can
match
the
National
Gallery
for
its
comprehensive
collection
of
Old
Master
paintings
covering
evei\v
period
in
art
from
the
13th
to
the
end
of
the
19th
century.
Whilst
the
total
collection
only
numbers
some
2050
paintings,
the
gallery
is
probably
unique
in
the
world
in
that
all
the
works
in
its
possession
are
usually
on
show
to
the
general
public.
To
choose
a
selection
of
paintings
to
represent
this
wonderful
collection
is
no
easy
task.
It
is
hoped,
however,
that
the
superb
reproductions
in
this
volume
will
serve
as
a
lasting
souvenir
for
those
who
have
been
fortunate
enough
to
visit
the
gallery
and
will
serve
as
a
foretaste of
the
treasures
it
contains
for
those
who
intend
to
do
so.
