Editorial
We are rail enthusiasts. We
are also voters and we are
organized. But there is so
much more dimension here
than mere labels. I’m not
here today to talk specifics
about the election, but I am
here to remind everyone that
when you cast your votes and
perform your civic duties,
there are plenty of subjects to
factor in.
Anytime our rights are violat-
ed or we are pushed behind
another group, there is always
an elected official somewhere
up the food chain that needs
to be made aware that this
injustice is going on. One
example of this is when a
train show is organized for a
publicly owned facility and
even though that show is the
biggest money making event
for that location, it is not the
first to be considered for
prime dates. Other displays
are taken first and the train
show gets what’s left at the
bottom of the barrel. Here is
one place we can gently
nudge our politicians to make
things fairer.
Another issue going on just
about everywhere is the in-

crease in prices for hall space
at publicly owned venues.
Our tax money goes into the
maintenance and upkeep for
these buildings. Gouging
shows at the initial rental on-
ly causes them to pass it
down to the attendees. These
are publicly funded facilities,
not businesses for profit and
ought to be treated as such,
keeping fees and rentals at a
fair price. We have the
weight and organizational
skills of societies, organiza-
tions and associations on our
side. Our political figures
need to know that if they help
fix the problem now, we will
do it next time with our vote.
We also need to identify our-
selves. We are Railfans…not
Terrorists. We are the re-
corders of history; those who
document industry for the
future. Law enforcement and
those in positions of political
authority need to be reminded
that we are voters and, as
such, they work for us and we
need to be treated with re-
spect when we are out rail-
fanning.
As much as I don’t want to
advocate for talking politics

at club meetings (as we have
so much important train stuff
to talk about!) we do need to
discuss a few of the issues
that affect each of our mem-
bers. While some of us may
identify as Republican, Dem-
ocrat or Independent, we are
all united as Rail Enthusiasts.
Now is the time to go out and
vote, be it on the national or
local front and vote what is
important to you and to your
interests. One vote and one
call can make all the differ-
ence.

What Is Gauge

Gauge is the distance between
two rails. It is measured from
the inside edges of the load
bearing rails.
Standard Gauge is used by
55% of rail lines in the world.
The measurement for Standard
Gauge is 4 feet 8 �½ inches or
1,435 millimeters.
Any measurement below Stan-
dard Gauge is labeled as Nar-
row Gauge and anything over
is called Broad Gauge.
